Senior Clinical Educator for Oxford Critical Care

The post-holder will be a highly experienced, knowledgeable practitioner who provides leadership in practice development and education to the non-medical workforce. They will role model best, evidence-based professional practice. Clinical educational support for learners at the bedside will be a substantial part of this role.

The Senior Clinical Educator will provide management and development support to junior educators. Through the design and implementation of education the practice development practitioner will contribute to interprofessional learning and clinical excellence. In order to deliver education that meets service needs and priorities the practice development practitioner will work collaboratively with clinical managers, the corporate education team, and external partners.

As a senior practitioner with specialist knowledge the post-holder will be active in supporting and furthering quality and governance structures. They will represent practice development and education on behalf of their clinical area. They will also be engaged with audit, service improvement and research.

Main duties of the job

Senior Clinical Educators will be able to:

  • Act as an exemplary role model for best clinical practice and Trust values
  • Work to an agreed job plan to maximise education delivery to support staff and patient safety/experience.
  • Supervise and manage clinical educators to promote effective working across the education team.
  • Use expert knowledge to actively promote and contribute to a positive inter-professional learning environment
  • Deliver education programmes at a divisional level and where required cross divisionally in support of organisational priorities.
  • Work as part of the local and corporate practice development teams
  • Manage and lead education teams
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate education programmes
  • Work as part of the local and corporate practice development teams
  • Work with clinical management to anticipate and address the educational needs of the service
  • Work across boundaries to proactively develop and sustain partnerships
  • Identify and support audit, service improvement and research projects

Clinical Practice

On a regular planned basis, or in response to an emergent need, contribute to clinical practice by working alongside learners delivering clinical care. Use coaching/mentoring techniques during contact time with learners to identify learning needs, improve standards, generate learning plans, respond to concerns, and escalate where necessary

Have highly developed clinical skills relevant to their areas of responsibility such that they may act as an expert resource for learners and clinical educators.

Demonstrate and promote a high standard of person-centred, holistic care.

Actively collaborate with a range of multi-agency and inter-professional resources in their practice

Lead an education team according to requirements outlined within the post holders job plan.

Work independently and within a team structure according to the standards set by their professional body

Apply leadership principles when influencing the ward and multi-disciplinary team

Use professional judgement in managing complex and unpredictable care events

Apply specialist knowledge and skill in complex decision making to determine evidence-based therapeutic interventions

Demonstrate and promote the effective management of patient journey / flow by teaching and contributing to the development of systems for operational performance

Model and teach adequate patient documentation that fulfils professional standards. Support clinical team leaders to set and monitor the standard of documentation

Be highly effective in using skilled interpersonal communication to convey information and advocate for the interests and well-being of those for whom they are responsible

Person Specification

Education, Training, Qulifications and Experience

Essential


  • Registered Nurse (Part 1 of the register) / Registered Allied Health Professional
  • UK Health related recognised Degree, relevant to post
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of NMC / HCPC revalidation
  • Appropriate period of post-registration acute nursing experience
  • Evidence of specialist knowledge appropriate to the clinical area or practice development and education
  • Evidence of experience and qualifications in supervising and assessing learners
  • Evidence of study at level 7
  • A post-graduate certificate in teaching
  • Familiar with and able to effectively use common office software suites (e.g. MS Office)
  • Experience of coaching
  • Experience designing, delivering and evaluating programmes of education

Desirable


  • National publication or presentation of audit, service improvement or research
