Mental Health Support Assistant

A progressive, high-achieving school in Hackney is looking for a Mental Health Support Assistant to work alongside their SEND, Pastoral and Safeguarding teams . Collaborating with these teams, the pupil and their parents, you will address additional needs required by students to make learning accessible to them.

The school is situated in Hackney and supports young people, aged 4-11, who have a range of additional needs associated with social, emotional mental health challenges. It's mainstream primary school, who provide fantastic support to ensure their pupils receive the education they deserve. As Mental Health Support Assistant, you will be working 1:1 with a student who requires extra support. The school has recently been graded as 'Outstanding' in key categories, such as leadership, management, and behaviour.

The senior leadership at this school are thoroughly supportive of their staff and are very keen to have psychology graduates join their ranks to bring fresh perspective as a Mental Health Support Assistant. This is the perfect role for someone with a keen interest in Psychology, Mental Health and Special Educational Needs as you will have the opportunity to shadow these professionals and gain hands-on experience.

Being a Mental Health Support Assistant consists of these responsibilities.

  • Mentoring students struggling with mental health to assess where the school can provide aid to that child,
  • Planning and delivering 1:1 and small group interventions,
  • Liaising with parents and teachers to inform on a student's mental health and what safeguarding requirements are necessary.

Mental Health Support Assistant - Person Specification

  • Graduate with a 1:1 or 2:1 degree,
  • Keen interest in psychology and education,
  • Patient, calm and empathetic personality,
  • Personal or professional experience with children,
  • Good understanding of mental health issues,
  • Good education levels of English and maths.
