University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust has a large portfolio of clinical trials involving medicinal products and pharmacy has a key role in ensuring that clinical trial medications are handled safely and in line with UK legislation.
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Pharmacist to join the Pharmacy trials team based at the Heartlands, Good Hope, and Solihull Hospital sites, with the option to work cross-site at the QE site.
The Trust hosts a growing number of commercial and non-commercial cancer clinical trials. Following recent new investment in pharmacy facilities, we will also be introducing advanced therapy trials to our portfolio on the Heartlands site this year. You will work within the multidisciplinary research and clinical teams to help deliver and further develop how we offer these innovative new treatments to our patients.
There will be opportunities to progress your knowledge and skills within the role both clinically and operationally through various nationally recognised training, including applying any prescribing qualifications you may have.
A requirement to participate in evening working, weekends and bank holidays on a rotational basis will be required.
You will be a key member of the pharmacy trials team as well as our cancer research and clinical teams -- the role is based at our Birmingham Heartlands Hospital dedicated research facility which delivers our cancer trials portfolio to patients across all 3 sites.
Be embedded as a member of the cancer multidisciplinary research team, reviewing trial protocols to assess local capacity and capability through effective communication and negotiation with the pharmacy clinical and aseptic technical teams, the wider multidisciplinary research and clinical teams, R& D, trial sponsors and clinical research organisations.
- Ensure the smooth set up and delivery of these trials to ensure that medications being used are appropriately prescribed, handled and monitored in a safe and timely manner in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and local practice.
- Be required to supervise and have oversight of other staff within the trials team, wider pharmacy and nursing teams delivering these trials.
As a trust, we are also supportive of non-medical prescribers using their knowledge and skills in clinical trials and are looking to encourage the development of this role further in trials pharmacy.
Experience of working within clinical trials is not a formal requirement as full training will be provided in the area.

*Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
*Postgraduate Diploma or MSc in Pharmacy Practice, or equivalent

Non-medical prescribing
*Any trial related training
*GCP training
*Formal aseptic training or qualification
*Management training

Post registration hospital pharmacy experience within the cancer setting
*Demonstrable pharmacy service to secondary and/or primary care users
*Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)
*Has worked effectively alone and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
*Has worked flexibly and effectively on many small projects or tasks concurrently
*Understanding of Clinical Trials legislation
*Understanding of National Clinical Trials policy and practice
*Knowledge of clinical research and its role in pharmacy and medicine.
*Willingness to travel across all sites within the Trust as required by the job role.
