Job summary

A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Pharmacy Technician to join the Rheumatology and Pharmacy Teams at the Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

Pharmacy services to the Rheumatology team are undergoing an exciting period of change. This role is new, and we are looking for an eager and innovative individual to develop the role of a technician in this area and improve how services are delivered to our patient. We want to increase the patient facing element of the service and expand our involvement. Working collaboratively with the Rheumatology team, our joint aim is to develop the Rheumatology service to further benefit our patients, who often have complex needs. The post holder will be based at the Birmingham Children's Hospital site and will be expected to provide expert medicines advice, medication reviews, counselling and participating in multidisciplinary team meetings. We also provide a homecare service to our patients and the postholder will be expected to work closely with the pharmacy homecare team.

Please note this is a 12 month fixed term position.

Main duties of the job

Sit within the Rheumatology Multidisciplinary Team assisting the Surgery Directorate Pharmacists to provide a clinical service. Enhance patient care and contribute to clinically safe, effective and cost efficient use of biologics/high cost drugs. To complete Medicines Reconciliation for Rheumatology Inpatients and Outpatients. Provide counselling for Rheumatology Inpatients and Outpatients. Liaise with the Pharmacy Homecare Team, Primary Care and other Trusts where patients are under a shared care agreement to support continuity of care. To monitor drug usage and provide cost savings where appropriate. To support in the development of SOPs and guidelines. To participate in the extended hours, weekend and bank holiday rotas as required.

Applicants will hold a valid BTEC & NVQ Level 3 Pharmaceutical Science Certificate and be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Services and BTEC (or equivalent) Registered with the GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician Accuracy Checking Technician Award

Knowledge and Nature of Experience

Essential

Medicines Management Experience providing ward based services Evidence of continuing professional development Knowledge of data protection and patient/staff confidentiality A clear concept of the developing role of the Pharmacy Technician Understanding Patient's needs, enabling the delivery of a safe and effective service.

Desirable

Experience of supervision and training other pharmacy staff Experience or knowledge of Hospital electronic prescribing systems Experience of training on new systems
