The Housing, Planning and Citiesteam are responsible for managing the spending for the Department ofLevelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). This involves workingwith DLUHC on policies to accelerate housing building, make housingmore affordable, and levelling up (reducing inequalities betweendifferent places in the UK).

We are responsiblefor over £10 billion of public spending each year, including housing,homelessness, planning reform, local economic growth and levelling upopportunity across the UK.

About the Job

We have an exciting role at the heart of HMTreasury's work on economic growth and levelling up (theGovernment’s mission to combat social and economic inequalitiesbetween places in the UK). Our role in crafting economic policy andits oversight of public spending makes HM Treasury an outstandingplace to make a tangible impact on these issues. We can offer you theopportunity to work on some of the Government’s biggest domesticpriorities, with keen interest from the Chancellor and otherMinisters.

Key accountabilities

  • Setting and articulating HM Treasury’s regional growthstrategy, including for the next Spending Review - this will involvedeveloping a strong understanding of regional growth, and how we canbest use HMT’s policy levers to drive it, working with others in HMTreasury to ensure it is part of our wider economic growth strategy.
  • Responsibility for c£4bn annual spending; You will supervisescrutiny of spending across all local growth budgets in DLUHC –working with the department to ensure taxpayers money is spentappropriately, efficiently and delivers value for money.
  • Encouraging excellent relationships with senior partners inDLUHC; No 10; external local growth specialists; local government; andthink tanks. We are an outward looking team and part of this willinvolve supporting your team in developing wider links with externalpartners in order to provide the best advice possible to HM TreasuryMinisters.
  • Strong and inclusive leadership and linemanagement of a team of 8 with 3 direct reports and 5 junior staffunder them. This is a priority for us, and you will set direction forthem, provide development opportunities and mentoring, and pastoralsupport to build an outstanding team.

About you

Our successful candidatewill be able to use strong analytical and policy skills, excellentjudgement, and strategic thinking to lead on a wide reaching and highprofile portfolio. You’ll be skilled at analysing and evaluating arange of information to draw out strong advice for Ministers. Lastly,you’ll comfortably build positive working relationships with a widerange of senior and external partners, deploying strong influencingand negotiating skills.
