Reading Berkshire, United Kingdom Into Games Full time

Quality assurance, or game testing, is crucial to ensure that games are launched without bugs and other mistakes.

In complex games, large teams of testers are required to explore the many possible variations of play. These include spotting visual glitches, spelling mistakes across different languages and inconsistencies across different consoles.

As Quality Assurance Manager you organise this task efficiently and ensure that problems are reported accurately so they can be fixed. You prioritise urgent issues, manage large numbers of game testers and communicate clearly with the development team.

Many Quality Assurance Managers have a degree, which provides professional development and a recognised qualification to employers. However, there are many available pathways and all people working in games claim a unique career journey. Above all, you will need to demonstrate passion and skills in your chosen field. For this job role, you should be someone who has a meticulous eye for detail, loves games and enjoys leading a team.

As a professional, you’ll be ensuring high standards by tracking and fixing any bugs during game development. You’ll understand QA testing methodologies and be responsible for designing, implementing and overseeing in-house processes and procedures.

You’ll have experience working with and maintaining various Database Management software applications like JIRA, Devtrack and Bugzilla. We recommend using our tool picker to help you choose the right ones for your current level and purpose.

Working in the games industry is highly competitive and you’ll need to make sure your CV stands out to employers and course leaders.

As a QA Manager, you must have previously worked in a QA position and ideally possess managerial experience. Most QA Managers begin their career in junior QA roles such as QA Tester or Playtester. Your CV should include previous roles and responsibilities and show a passion for games. For more ideas, see our top tips page on building your portfolio .

Even after 11 years in QA I’m still learning new tools.

Playtesters trial and establish if a game is going to be commercially viable.

Localisation QA Testers ensure continuity in the games’ language, grammar and context.
