United Kingdom Tewv Brits Full time
Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust

We are looking to recruit a 0.5 wte Highly Specialist Applied Psychologist for 23 months. This is an exciting opportunity to join the multi-site research team, led by Professor Daniel Freeman, undertaking a randomised controlled trial evaluating Feeling Safer an intervention for people with persecutory delusions.

The post holders base will be agreed with the successful candidate however some travel across the TEWV footprint will be required. We welcome interest from existing TEWV employees and external candidates.

An equivalent post is being advertised in Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust; if you are interested in applying for both positions to create a 1.0 wte position please note this in your application. Recruitment dates are aligned to accommodate this.

We are looking for an Applied Psychologist with a strong interest in Cognitive Therapy, treatment innovation and clinical research.

Main duties of the job

The role will be central to the trial delivery with responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of Feeling Safer in Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. This will include delivering psychological therapy and supervision of trial recruitment and the clinical delivery of the intervention.

They will be accountable to the site principal investigator Dr Stephanie Common and they will receive supervision from Prof Daniel Freeman (Chief Investigator) and Dr Felicity Waite from the lead site: Oxford.

The Feeling Safer intervention follows the logic of the original Feeling Safe intervention which has been proven highly effective in clinical trials. In this new NIHR-funded programme of research Professor Daniel Freeman and team at the University of Oxford have created a new six-month guided online programme delivery. It is an accessible and expanded version of the face-to-face Feeling Safe therapy. Users can access Feeling Safer whenever they choose via smartphone/computer/or tablet. The Feeling Safer trial will now test the intervention in NHS mental health services at six sites across England. By providing Feeling Safe in an accessible version for use across the NHS, we aim to achieve substantially improved outcomes for the large number of people with persecutory delusions who have not responded sufficiently to current treatment.

About us

We are committed to co-creating safe and personalised care that improves the lives of people by involving them as equal partners. The most important way we will get there is by living our values, all of the time.

Responsibility for the organisation, day-to-day management, and running of one site of a large randomised controlled trial with patients with psychosis and persecutory delusions. It will be particularly important to meet recruitment targets, ensure a high retention rate in the trial, and a high uptake of the Feeling Safer treatment.

To supervise other staff in the delivery of the treatment, ensuring high rates of engagement and fidelity to the protocol.

To supervise the research assistants working on the trial, ensuring recruitment targets are achieved, assessments are completed, and blinding of research assessors is maintained.

To provide regular reports on the progress of the study. This will include providing information required by the funder.
