London, United Kingdom ROYAL AIR FORCE Full time

As an RAF Logistics Officer, you will manage the movement of the people, transport and equipment necessary to keep aircraft flying. Logistics Officers are the custodians of the supply chain in the UK and on exercises and operations overseas.

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Purchase and store equipment and fuel
  • Operate IT systems that manage RAF logistics
  • Organise global distribution by road, sea and air

As a Logistics Officer, you will be a leader responsible for the management of a high number of service and civilian logistics personnel, a mixture of Drivers and Suppliers. Your role will be to support Station flying operations by providing a variety of transportation, including specialist vehicles. You will also be responsible for the management of all fuel and lubricants to the Station and the refuelling of all fast jet aircraft based there. You will manage elements of the whole supply chain including the purchasing and storage of equipment and fuel; logistics IT management systems; and global distribution by road, sea and air.

You will be responsible for organising the airlift of equipment and troops worldwide and for delivering catering and hospitality services to the RAF, both in the UK and overseas.

Within your first couple of years, you could travel overseas for anything from a few days to a few months, either in support of operations or on exercise. You would gain experience at one of our UK flying stations or within an Air Combat Service Support Unit such as our Air Mobility Wing, Tactical Supply Wing, Expeditionary Logistics Squadron, Mobile Catering Squadron or Mechanical Transport Squadron, all of which provide essential overseas logistic support to air operations.

INITIAL TRAINING

Like all our officers, you will begin your RAF career with Initial Officer Training (IOT) at the RAF College Cranwell in Lincolnshire. You will follow a challenging 24-week course designed to develop your leadership and management skills. The course includes fitness development, military training and academic study as well as practical outdoor leadership challenges.

SPECIALIST TRAINING

Specialist training is delivered during Logistics Officer Training (LOT) at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. You will undertake an 18-week specialist training course designed to give you a thorough grounding in logistics. You will study supply chain management, fuels management, transport management, catering and hospitality, mobility (the function of preparing, deploying, sustaining and recovering RAF flying squadrons from overseas) and management topics such as Quality management, personnel management, change management and contract management. You could also gain a BSc in Logistics Management (accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT)) by successfully passing the course and completing five assignments. Following successful completion of this course you will be posted on your first tour, undertaking further training in catering management, transport management, fuels management or mobility, as required by your new role. Later in your career you may also opt to specialise in a number of specialisations including air movements or fuels management.
