An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Neonatal Surgical Unit at Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust as a Band 6 Nurse.

The post holder will be a compassionate, accountable individual who treats all colleagues, patients and service users with respect and seeks to deliver excellence in their role. They will share the Trust values and be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.

The post holder will be a key member of the Neonatal Surgical Unit, who provide care to premature and new-born babies requiring special, high dependency and intensive care in conjunction with most surgical specialities from the Yorkshire and Humber region. The Neonatal Surgical Unit is fantastic team, who deliver expert care to our babies and families whilst being supportive and kind to each other.

Band 6 Nurse will be already qualified in Neonatal Speciality (QIS), have significant experience working as a Band 5 or 6 in a Neonatal Unit and be able to demonstrate excellent leadership skills.

Main duties of the job

Band 6 nurse will be responsible for

  • demonstrating excellent leadership skills in the provision of care to babies and their families.
  • work well as part of the team, provide support and promote good wellbeing.
  • have a willingness to lead agreed projects related to practice and professional development
  • have the desire to build on their previous experience
  • to act as a patient and carer advocate.

Job responsibilities
  • To co-ordinate and provide skilled nursing care to patients, in accordance with responsibilities under the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Having completed, or having an interest in undertaking a neonatal qualification (QIS) you will be a role model and source of specialist knowledge in the care of the surgical newborn.
  • Act as an advocate for patients and carers.
  • To plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for an allocated patient group, in consideration of individual need, using prioritisation and delegation skills.
  • To assist the Ward Manager in managing and developing the Ward/Department and promoting a positive environment.
  • To work collaboratively within a Multidisciplinary team, internal and external to the organisation, to facilitate holistic seamless care delivery for all Trust Patients.
  • To provide leadership to junior staff and manage the ward in the absence of the ward manager.
  • To support the ward manager in his/her role and participate in managing the ward, staff and resources, to maintain standards within the clinical governance agenda.
  • To represent the ward at regional and national meetings/conferences

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Degree or Diploma Level Education as Registered Nurse (RN Child or RSCN or equivalent )
  • Current registration with NMC
  • Mentoring and assessors qualification
  • Intensive care of newborn course or intention to undertake such 'qualified in speciality' (Q.I.S) course
Experience
  • Considerable experience in nursing neonates
  • Recent experience nursing neonates requiring intensive care/ post-operative care
  • NLS / Paediatric Life Support training
  • Extended role skills eg IV practice, stoma care
  • Understanding of the role of Band 6 Staff Nurse
  • Demonstrate ability to work within and lead a team
  • Speciality of ward or department
  • Other Extended Roles relevant to post
  • Lead on a special interest project relative to neonatal care
Knowledge and Skills
  • Understanding of the clinical governance agenda and processes
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Health, Safety and Risk awareness
  • Awareness of resource management
  • Health & Safety Safe Practices e.g. Lifting and Handling, Sharps, COSHH
  • Principles and practice of Infection Control
  • Principles of Safeguarding of children & training to Level 3
  • Knowledge of national / local neonatal issues
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to use own initiative and prioritise admissions/discharges
  • Ability to respect the cultural, social and religious diversity within society.
  • Understanding data collection within the ward environment and its relevance to future planning.
