Overall purpose

The post holder will focus on providing specialist support for students with disabilities and specific learning differences (SpLDs), in addition to general advice to the wider student population. As part of a team of professional support staff, the post holder with work closely with the Head of Student Supprt, academic and professional services to provide effective and integrated services to students and specialist advice to teaching staff.

Regent College London’s diverse student population includes a significant proportion of students with disabilities and additional learning needs. The Disability Coordinator will assist students with Disabled Student Allowance applications and identify support with diagnostic assessments. The Disability Coordinator will be able to understand diagnostic assessments and identify adjustments with Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs).

The Disability Coordinator will work in a team of with Wellbeing and Disability Advisers and Coordinators to provide comprehensive support and guidance to a diverse population of students. The team are responsible for providing wellbeing support on a one to one basis, group seminars and workshops, coordinating peer support initiatives and supporting staff in their development and understanding of wellbeing matters. Disability inclusion support consists of advice and support to students who are differently abled, or who present with a recognised disability, both those seeking reasonable adjustments and support from Regent College in the form of specialist equipment, other assistive technology and/or non-medical help, and those seeking general support and guidance. The point of ‘inclusion’ is to draw in all levels of ability, and to engage proactively with students across a broad spectrum of recognised and non-recognised traits that might impact upon their studies.

Specific duties and responsibilities

  1. Provide specialist advice, guidance, and support to disabled & students with long-term medical conditions and mental health conditions.
  2. Develop plans and reasonable adjustments in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
  3. Reduce and remove barriers to accessing learning and teaching for disabled students.
  4. Liaising with academics and other members of staff, where necessary, to ensure students receive appropriate on-going support.
  5. Read and understand diagnostic assessments with the objective of determining the technical and human support study needs of a student with a disability and/or SpLDs.
  6. Construct written reports of equipment/services, costs and potential suppliers that students need
  7. Demonstrate a range of suitable assistive technology and specialist software that students need
  8. Keep up-to-date with all relevant legislation, policies and updates relating to disabilities, government funding (DSA), equipment and software, higher education and support strategies.
  9. Participate in Continuous Professional Development to ensure that each assessment report reflects an in-depth and up-to-date knowledge and awareness of enabling technology hardware, software, support strategies, policies and relevant legislation.
  10. Working with academic and professional/specialist support staff to develop and deliver a programme of events and activities to support both applicants to the institute and students in relation to wellbeing and mental health.
  11. Ensure compliance with guidelines and regulations related to disability support services and Regent College London’s partners.
  12. Contribute to the overall improvement of disability support services within RCL.
  13. Planning and delivering high-quality workshops, webinars and presentations to students and staff (in-person and digitally).
  14. Deal competently, sensitively and in a professional manner when interacting with students who can be distressed and or demanding, observing confidentiality in line with Data Protection and GDPR and policy regulations including those with external partnerships.
  15. With appropriate training, act as a Safeguarding Lead for the college.

Person Specification

  • A degree in a relevant field such as Disability Studies, Psychology, Education, Social Work, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working directly with students with disabilities, specific learning differences (SpLDs), mental health conditions, and long-term medical conditions.
  • Proven track record of providing specialist advice, guidance, and support to disabled students.
  • Experience in developing and implementing reasonable adjustments and support plans.
  • Familiarity with Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) applications and procedures.
  • Knowledge of a range of assistive technologies and specialist software used to support students with disabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to produce clear and concise reports and documentation.
  • Empathy and understanding when working with students who may be distressed or facing challenges.
  • Organizational skills to manage workload effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Full understanding and commitment to upholding Data Protection and GDPR regulations.
  • Willingness to undergo additional training as required, including Safeguarding Lead training.
  • Ability to work flexibly is a requirement of this role; and you will be part of a rota that operates from 9am-6pm across weekdays; occasional weekend and evening work may be required.
