Board Members - Advisory Board for Safer Gambling (ABSG) Please make sure you read the following details carefully before making any applications. Remote The Gambling Commission is seeking to appoint 2 new members of ABSG. The successful candidate will help ABSG to advise the Gambling Commission on its regulation to prevent harms and protect consumers. The Benefits:

Candidates will have experience of:
  • Research into safer gambling and methods of harm prevention
  • International gambling studies
  • Research into risks associated with different gambling products and practices
The preferred candidate will have experience of:
  • Inter-disciplinary work on gambling related research projects
  • Publishing peer reviewed research on gambling related issues
  • Demonstrable academic credibility and impact nationally and internationally
We welcome candidates who bring international expertise, and we will consider how we can be flexible to involve non-GB-based candidates into the work of ABSG. Experience of working on other executive or advisory boards in the public, voluntary or private sector is desirable. Overview of ABSG ABSG provides independent advice to the Gambling Commission on issues related to safer gambling and prevention of harms to inform regulation. Its advice is based on expertise and insights from academia, research, and other relevant disciplines inside and outside of gambling. The scope of ABSGs role includes:
  • Helping the Commission deliver an evidence-based approach to gambling policy and its regulatory approach articulated in the new Corporate Strategy.
  • Helping the Gambling Commission access and translate insights from the wider academic research community to inform its regulatory role.
  • Helping the Gambling Commission to build networks and contacts within academia and other areas of professional expertise which are relevant to harm prevention.
  • Contributing to the Commissions horizon scanning capability and recommending priorities for future research to inform regulation.
  • Helping inform policy dilemmas where research evidence is lacking or ambiguous.

We recognise that the debate on funding sources is evolving, and we respect those academics who have maintained a different view. ABSGs position on optimal structures for funding for research is set out below: Advice to the Gambling Commission on a statutory levy Time commitment: The time commitment is expected to be up to two days per month on average. This includes attending six ABSG meetings per year and engaging on thematic issues via workshops, working groups and reviewing and commenting on relevant advice papers. Meetings will be predominantly online, with in-person meetings held once or twice a year. We are happy to accommodate to different time zones.
