For over seventy years the Osteopathic Foundation (initially the Osteopathic Education Foundation) has been supporting osteopathic education, research, and development. We fund research and education activities through our grant-giving programmes. Since 2000, we have distributed over £1 million of support to advance osteopathic practice for public benefit.

We are seeking new Board members to sit on the Board of the Osteopathic Foundation. The Board meets quarterly online/in person to approve grants, monitor investment performance and report on activities. Please see the attached role specification for full details of the responsibilities.

We are looking for potential Board members with broad experience and a practical attitude. A proven track record in one or more of the following would also be helpful, especially in relation to charities: finances, business acumen, legal management, and/or fundraising. Osteopathic or medical experience is not a prerequisite for this role, but curiosity and self-awareness are.

Who We Are:

The Osteopathic Foundation is a registered charity which raises and administers funds in support of all aspects of UK Osteopathic development, education, research, promotion and practice for the benefit of public health, in the main through the provision of grants, as well as support for undergraduate and postgraduate education. Founded originally some seventy years ago as the Osteopathic Education Foundation, the oF works under the stewardship of the Institute of Osteopathy, the professional association for UK osteopaths.

Responsibilities

The specific responsibilities of the Board will include, but will not necessarily be limited to the following:

approval of grants for permitted purposes development of and implementation of a fundraising strategy advise the iO Council on the development strategy for the oF, operate the oF within budget, and report regularly on activities and performance prepare investment policies, and monitor investment performance work with the iO Audit Committee and the oF's auditors on the preparation of the oF's accounts develop links with relevant external organisations, such as the osteopathic stakeholders monitor the performance of the Executive Remuneration Membership of the Board is unremunerated, but expenses will be reimbursed according to the iO Expenses Policy.

Competences for Lay and Professional Members

Essential:

Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of charity governance, and adhering to the seven Nolan principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership. Prior experience in committee/charity work. Commitment to the charity's objects, aims and values and willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities. Strategic and forward looking vision in relation to the charity's objects and aims. Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment. Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to gain and respect the confidence of fellow Board members. Balancing tact and diplomacy with a willingness to challenge and constructively criticise. Awareness of healthcare and services delivered by osteopaths. Ability to work in partnership with the Chair, other committee members and the iO's Chief Executive to deliver the oF's objectives. Strong team player. Desirable:

Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the iO. A wider involvement with the voluntary sector. Experience of chairing meetings (essential for the Chair) and committee work. Leadership skills.

Requirements for professional members

Knowledge and experience of the broad range of osteopathic practice. Minimum of three years' post qualification experience.

Specialist skills

As well as the personal characteristics listed above, the iO Appointments Committee is keen to appoint new Board members with a mix of specialist skills, to include for this appointment one or more of the following:
