UKCEH is looking for an experienced IT Science Computing Engineer to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

You will be joining a small but highly effective specialist IT team and play your part in ensuring that UKCEH can maintain a welding role in world science comprising of HPC and cloud workloads both on-prem and cloud where applicable. As the organisation focuses on its tech stack, your role will involve helping to identify and expand our resources to accommodate the increasing demands on the science computing team.
Your primary responsibility involves supporting with the establishment of a dependable science computing infrastructure for UKCEH, with the goal of improving its efficiency, effectiveness, and adaptability to changing conditions. In this capacity, you will serve as a point of escalation for support from both the IT Support and infrastructure teams, extending your support across the entire organisation. You will also be responsible for process documentation and the generation of pertinent reports, utilising tools such as Wiki, Netbox, Service Desk Plus, and Ansible comments. Your will also be responsible for building, configuration, and administration of scientific computing technologies, encompassing HPC Linux servers, virtual machines, containers, networking, software development environments, cloud computing services (Azure, AWS), and field equipment.
Routine maintenance tasks for science computing systems encompass patch management, monitoring design, configuration, coding, system hardening, auditing, and coding any necessary glue tools. Additionally, you will use Ansible automation to aid DevOps support science teams, and contribute to the implementation of all required policies from the SecOps team. Lastly, your responsibilities will extend to conducting monitoring and capacity planning activities to guarantee sufficient resources for anticipated science team needs, covering areas such as storage, CPU, and RAM capacity.
Provide crucial support for production Linux systems across various distributions, including Redhat, Centos, Rocky, and Ubuntu
Offer expertise in server and storage management within a complex Linux environment, utilising a range of infrastructures.
Working with configuration management systems such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or Salt
Within this role you will be instrumental in driving improvements towards our long-term strategic direction. This encompasses tasks such as developing Ansible modules, contributing to service improvements, recommending new systems and software, and actively coordinating and participating in multiple cross-functional initiatives and projects.
For the role of IT Science Computing Engineer, we’re looking for somebody who:
Holds a degree in an IT related subject or possesses relevant work experience in a comparable role
Is confident supporting production Linux systems across multiple distributions
Demonstrates proficiency using configuration management systems such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or Salt
Has previous experience working with public cloud technology and providers (AWS, Azure), including API public cloud and internal APIs
Demonstrable experience with high performance computing (HPC) and experience of using monitoring software such as Zabbix
Is confident with simplifying intricate issues and technologies, and capable of articulating complex concepts in understandable terms to non-IT staff
