Job Purpose and Summary:

Ethnicity and Mental Health Improvement Project (EMHIP) is seeking a dedicated Community Mental Health Worker (CMHW) to deliver high-quality mental health and wellbeing services to individuals from Black African, Caribbean, and Asian heritage communities in the Wandsworth, Tooting, and Battersea areas. The CMHW will be an integral member of the EMHIP Health and Wellbeing Hub team, providing person-centred, culturally appropriate assessments, interventions, and support to service users and their families.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct culturally appropriate, person-centred assessments and provide tailored interventions.
  • Collaborate with community and statutory agencies to promote health and wellbeing.
  • Work alongside community mental health teams to deliver psychosocial interventions.
  • Facilitate early access to mental health care, address stigma, and promote awareness within the community.
  • Support individuals with long-term mental health conditions, along with their families and carers, under the Care Programme Approach (CPA).
  • Provide cognitive and social skills training, psychoeducation, and family support.
  • Engage young people at risk of mental health issues, focusing on early intervention and support.
  • Ensure treatment adherence and monitor for early signs of relapse.

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Hubs Will:

  • Offer a safe space for individuals experiencing mental health challenges.
  • Serve as an access point for mental health services, including crisis intervention.
  • Provide assessments, triage, and signposting to appropriate services.
  • Facilitate connections to community resources, including support for accessing benefits, housing, and debt services.
  • Encourage engagement in voluntary work, vocational training, and employment.
  • Promote social capital and community involvement to enhance mental health.
  • Collaborate with primary and secondary care services for comprehensive support.

Relationships:

The CMHW will work closely with:

  • Hub Manager and Staff
  • External stakeholders
  • Service users, carers, and the wider community

Personal Development:

Regular reviews will be conducted to set objectives and identify development opportunities aligned with CEN’s goals.


Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: Level 4/A-Level or a degree in Health and Social Care, Social Work, Mental Health, or related fields.
  • Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work in a diverse and multicultural environment, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience: Prior experience working with diverse populations, particularly within African-Caribbean, African, or Asian communities in the UK. Knowledge of mental health issues and the impact of systemic racism and discrimination.

Desirable Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience in health, social care, or community agencies.
  • Familiarity with safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of confidentiality principles in handling sensitive information.
