An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Technical Lead to join the STV News team based in Glasgow. The Technical Lead will work closely with all areas of production, across news and non-news programmes. They will provide first level technical support for news output across the week, with a particular focus on STV News at Six.

Working ahead to plan significant productions with newsgathering, the technical lead will help identify the necessary resources for programming. In conjunction with the Technical Resource Organiser and the Production Coordinator they will maximize efficiency in staffing and technical resources.

Improving efficiency in the use of core technical staffing across Glasgow and Edinburgh is a key priority. The Technical Lead will be responsible for ensuring programmes are properly resourced and that the technical team have the training and skills required.

The successful candidate will ideally have operational experience in live broadcast production and be skilled in camera operation/directing/sound or other appropriate technical roles. 

There will be a continuing requirement for providing holiday cover, some on rota shifts and emergency cover in an operational role.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Attend set piece production and external event meetings and recces to ensure all technical requirements are captured, communicated, and provided as necessary.
  • Line management of members of the technical team with responsibility for the team development and performance. Act as a point of contact between that team and senior News managers.
  • Provide first level maintenance of ESC and MMJ camera kits.
  • Work with news resources to manage the assignment, servicing and movement of ESC and MMJ vehicles.
  • Provide first line maintenance and fault finding for the Avid Production Asset Management systems and studios across STV Central broadcast region.
  • Work with Head of Broadcast Operations to scope, create and manage recurring technical maintenance across Central Studios and Avid systems within the studio teams.
  • Work with News gathering and Production teams to manage technical requirements, hires and purchases as required across News and Block plan programming.
  • Training and development of editorial and technical teams in new equipment and workflows.
  • With support from the Head of Broadcast Operations drive and shape the operational and strategic development of technical resources and production facilities including evaluation of innovative technology and workflows.
  • Management of priorities, resources and scheduling within the technical resources and production facilities teams including forward planning and monitoring of performance.
  • Understanding and expectation to be flexible and responsive to rapidly changing news circumstances as they develop.
  • Identify and create opportunities to add value at both an operational and strategic level.
  • Set guidelines and standards for technical staff.
  • Have financial responsibility for the technical and operational day to day running of the News & Current Affairs operation across the STV Central broadcasting region.

Key skills and experience required:

  • Extensive experience in news broadcasting environment, with a proven record of accomplishment and in-depth knowledge of technical operational management, resource management and scheduling.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the digital end-to-end newsgathering and production process and a proven best-practice application.
  • Ability to keep News and Current Affairs at the forefront through a strong understanding of current and emerging production techniques and technical developments.
  • A demonstrable depth of experience across technical resources and production facilities.
  • Substantial experience in working with the statutory and legal requirements which affect the media – including current health and safety legislation to ensure best practice for news and current affairs.
  • Advanced communication and negotiation skills to work closely with technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Developed organisation, planning and problem-solving skills to handle competing priorities.
