Overview


Are you passionate about entrepreneurship and eager to make a difference to one of life’s most challenging moments, death? We're on the hunt for a dynamic and proven CTO to help shape and lead the tech at the heart of our venture, Compassio, which is being built within the ARK Venture Studio.


Compassio aims to make families stronger, not more vulnerable, when a parent dies. We do this by changing and digitising how they plan for death, using AI for scenario planning and simulations, and by joining up the elderly parent, their children, and their advisors into a single planning unit.


We already have part of the founding team on board, proven startup leaders with strong fundraising track records and backgrounds in financial services and death-tech. Given this is a tech startup, we are now seeking a complementary CTO co-founder that can build out our product prototype and build and lead an engineering team as we develop richer feature and plan for deeper integrations with relevant GTM software platforms. 


Our ideal candidate is a hands-on technologist, able to take direct responsibility for early prototypes and technology products, but also a tech strategist and leader, who can build and direct a team of engineers. Specific tech experience / skillset is flexible, as we haven’t committed to any tech stack or choices. 


It would be valuable to have specific experience in the wealth management & financial advisory sector (plus legal services if possible as a secondary fit). And our candidate must be someone with strong experience in early-stage startups. 


This new co-founder will work alongside the recently-appointed co-founders, supported by the venture studio team. They will help build the prototype, plan for the MVP tech build, design the solution architecture, and more. Ultimately, we intend for these three co-founders to lead the new Compassio business to launch in the UK, scale (UK and beyond), impact and exit.

As a CTO, you will be responsible for:


  • Rapidly iterating and testing first version prototypes: we’re looking to you to roll your sleeves up and build that first prototype directly, iterating it quickly and efficiently to validate it ahead of funding gates.
  • Designing and developing our core product: the tech product will be firmly in your hands to shape and develop, initially yourself, and then with a growing team. 
  • Making architecture decisions to ensure a strong, stable, and scalable product: we’ll need plans in place quickly to support the next funding round - your vision can be brought to the table quickly. 
  • Building out our tech stack and engineering hiring plan: we want someone who can take long-term responsibility & ownership of every aspect of our technology plans, build and support mechanisms. 
  • Working with engineering team to increase their expertise and understanding of best development practices


Our ideal team member must-haves are these:


  • Tech & engineering leadership: Significant experience in software architecture and personally building digital products from early-stage through to scaling and maturity. Management, mentoring & inspiration of a small team of engineers providing architectural guidance, code reviews, etc.Experience in project management to ensure timely deliverables
  • Full-stack knowledge: Deep knowledge of full-stack modern startup development practices. We have not committed yet to any choices, so are open to options.
  • Zero to Product Market Fit and revenue: they must have all the scars from founding startups as a CTO, and a passion to build impactful, valuable businesses. They must have demonstrable track record of pivoting technology to find and evidence product market fit. And they should have got to revenue. Our existing co-founders bring this experience, too, but it is a must-have for us in this additional role.
  • Building disruptive tech-based solutions: they must be able to point to the 0-1 and 1-10 stages of building tech-based products and services that disrupt a market.
  • Strong product sense, and customer-centricity: they must have an eye for product, and for solving customer painpoints. UX must be strongly familiar, and customer-testing a key part of their modus operandi.


We are looking for someone who is eager to get their sleeves rolled up, is happiest working as a co-founder with other high-calibre peers, and who is looking to take on a de-risked startup as a founding team member.
