Wiltshire, United Kingdom ST JOHNS COLLEGE Full time

Deputy Development Director (Philanthropy)

Grade 8 scale, currently (£45,585 to £54,395) p.a., depending on experience.

St Johns College, Oxford

This is an enhanced, senior role at St John’s and represents an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious fundraiser to join a college with tremendous potential and to take on a leadership role in a friendly team at a significant point in the College’s evolution.  St John’s has recently undertaken a comprehensive ‘Size and Shape’ review, examining what kind of college it wishes to be in not only five years’ time but in fifty.  Projects and aspirations which are emerging from that review include new Tutorial Fellowships; transforming the student support we offer at both the undergraduate and graduate level to ensure they remain exceptional; building on our innovative and pioneering Inspire access and outreach programmes (already amongst the very best in Oxford); and unique capital projects which make up a Masterplan for an unusually large college in central Oxford.

St John’s was not amongst the first Oxford colleges to establish a dedicated fundraising and alumni relations office but the Fellowship is committed to supporting the Development Office to become one of the best in Oxford. The last few years have been amongst St John’s most successful in terms of philanthropy; our alumni relations and donor engagement activities have been transformed in recent years.

We are looking for a well-motivated, dynamic and confident colleague who will be excited by the opportunity to play a part in making St John’s excel in its fundraising. The successful candidate will be offered considerable opportunities to advance their career and will work closely with the President, Principal Bursar and other Fellows.

The post-holder will manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors with the potential to make major gifts, drawn from senior business leaders, philanthropists and other figures in public life and will, once established, lead the College’s mid-level major giving, working on six-figure+ gifts while also encouraging mid-range major gifts. The role will have exposure to high-level donors internationally and will enjoy very considerable freedom in approaching potential donors drawn from our alumni pool and beyond.

While the role would suit someone who is keen to focus on fundraising rather than management, there will be opportunities to take on more management responsibilities if that is desirable. The current post-holder has direct management responsibility for the Development Manager, who oversees all the College’s regular giving programmes, so the post-holder would need to be comfortable with managing and guiding our activity in this area, if this management responsibility were to continue.

The role would be ideally suited to an experienced fundraising professional but, most of all, we are looking for a colleague who will enjoy working with us so we will consider candidates with aptitude and potential for development, for which the salary offered will be commensurate with their adjusted responsibilities and experience.

This is a full-time post on the University’s Grade 8 scale, currently (£45,585 to £54,395) p.a., depending on experience.

Further particulars can be downloaded from the College website.

To apply, please send a full CV as well as a covering letter and the names and contact details of two referees (as a single pdf) by email.

Closing date for applications is 12 noon 20 June 2024.  It is anticipated that first round interviews will take place on Tuesday 2 July and second interviews on Thursday 11 July.

St John’s College, Oxford, is committed to Equal Opportunities and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
