Diocesan Secretary and Cathedral Chief Operating Officer

Diocese of Liverpool
Diocesan Secretary and Cathedral Chief Operating Officer
Salary: c.£75,000
Closing date: 17:00 on Wednesday 2 October
An exciting opportunity has arisen to welcome a new colleague to share in the leadership of Diocese of Liverpool and its Cathedral at an exciting and fast-changing time. As a diocese, we are unique in many ways, not least in the relationship between the Diocese and the Cathedral, which benefit from close shared working and alignment in key operational areas. The Diocese of Liverpool has a population of 1.6 million and is a vibrant and diverse set of communities across the city of Liverpool and surrounding areas. Although the diocese has some of the highest levels of deprivation of any in the country, our Fit for Mission programme is hugely ambitious in driving cultural and structural change to accelerate mission and deliver growth in churches in all areas. At the heart of the Diocese, Liverpool Cathedral is a vibrant place of worship that welcomes over 700,000 visitors a year to worship, to enjoy our varied programme of events and educational programmes, and to find space for quiet and reflection. We are looking forward. Over the past twenty years, the Cathedral and Diocese have shared resources and key to this has been the role of Diocesan Secretary and Chief Operating Officer of the cathedral. Both organisations are innovative, ambitious and this is an exciting moment to join at the outset of a significant period of transformation.
The role of the Diocesan Secretary and Cathedral Chief Operating Officer plays a critical part in the life of the mission and ministry in the region. You will act as a key partner to the Bishop and Dean in implementing ambitious strategies for both organisations, ensuring that the resources and people are fully aligned to deliver with real impact. You will lead the staff teams, building a collaborative and high-performing culture that delivers effectively whilst providing opportunities for staff to develop and fulfil their potential. You will co-operate and work together with our many and varied partners across and beyond the Diocese, supporting the Bishop and Dean in ensuring that each Christian community, and the Cathedral, are empowered and engaged in the delivery of our ministry and vision. You will be supported by a strong team in place, a clear and innovative direction of travel, and a collaborative culture where collective endeavour is a reality.
For this unique role, we are looking for a person who will bring a track record of successful strategic and operational leadership gained in a complex and diverse environment in the private or public sector. You will have a proven ability to support, nurture and develop a collaborative team of professionals, building effective relationships at all levels both within and out with your direct sphere of control. You will be a capable financial and budgetary leader, comfortable delivering results within an environment with complex governance and ambiguity. You are a practising Christian of any denomination* able to demonstrate a clear commitment to the mission of the Church of England and, more specifically, the Diocese of Liverpool.
For further information on this exciting opportunity, and for an informal discussion about your suitability, please contact Matt Malone of GatenbySanderson at matt.malone@gatenbysanderson.com and click Apply.
* It is an occupational requirement in accordance with schedule 9 paragraph 1 of the Equality Act 2010 for the holder of this role to be a practising Christian and communicant member of the Church of England or a member church of Churches Together in England.
