Aboutthe Team

The Science, Technology & Access toFinance (STAF) team advises on how the UK can make the most of thisopportunity. We oversee spending by, and lead the Treasury’srelationship with, the Department for Science, Innovation andTechnology (DSIT). We lead on the allocation and monitoring ofR&D spending across government. We are responsible for HMTpolicy on the technologies including - AI, quantum, telecoms,semiconductors, and engineering biology and HMT’s strategy for thedigital technology sector. We lead on access to finance, includingmanaging the Treasury’s relationship with the British BusinessBank.


Aboutthe Job

This is an exciting andfast paced role that is central to how His Majesty’s Governmentresponds to the opportunities and risks posed by AI, alongside howwe support the growth of the techsector.  


Inthis role, youwill:

·        Respondto Briefings, Correspondence and Parliamentary Questions (PQs)commissions: You will need to work flexibly with other team membersto draft high quality responses to briefing and correspondencerequests, PQs and FoIs on a range of digital technology and techsector issues. You will be responsible for ensuring the team’s‘standard lines’ and core facts about the sector and AI are up todate to ensure responses are accurate andtimely.

·        DraftAdvice on Digital Technology Policy and Spending: Working with theteam, DSIT and wider colleagues in HMT you will assess the evidencebase and scrutinise the affordability and value for money ofdifferent proposals that support the growth of the tech sector inthe UK and the contribution of technology adoption to widerproductivity and growth across the country. You will support adviceto Ministers on the measures and interventions that meet theirpriorities. 

·        TechSector Stakeholder Engagement: This role involves supporting plentyof Ministerial visits, events and international trips. Working withother team members and HMT colleagues, you will provide Ministerswith advice on how they should engage with the tech sector andbriefings for these engagement opportunities. This will involvebuilding a strong working knowledge of the sector and workingclosely with the relevant stakeholders to agree objectives andpriorities for these differentopportunities. 


AboutYou

You do not need to havebackground in AI or digital technology to apply. We’re looking fora highly motivated self-starter, who can pick up new materialquickly and who is keen to learn about the policy area.


You should besomeone who is confident working with quantitative and qualitativedata and can use these analytical skills to assess policyproblems, review business cases and develop nuanced policyadvice.


You enjoyworking in a fast-paced environment and can balance multiplepriorities and deadlines, while progressing longer-term pieces ofwork.
