Job Purpose

  • The Volunteer Development Manager will support and help grow our team of 200+ volunteers, ensuring they receive recognition and training while also being ambitious about future volunteering opportunities. This role involves developing and nurturing current volunteers and creating new roles and programs. The ideal candidate will be organised, creative, and a multitasker who enjoys being busy, shows great attention to detail, and loves thinking of better ways to do things.


Key Responsibilities:

Volunteer Recruitment and Selection:

  • Develop and implement effective recruitment strategies to attract a diverse pool of volunteers through both internal and external outreach events.
  • Conduct interviews and selection processes to ensure the right match between volunteers' skills and organisational needs.
  • Take new volunteers through a training and orientation program, making sure they are confident and happy in their roles.

Volunteer Training and Development:

  • Organise and deliver comprehensive training programs for new volunteers, including role inductions, customer service, health and safety, and heritage property security.
  • Write and deliver training programs for both new and returning volunteers, ensuring compliance with legislation and practice guidelines.
  • Provide ongoing training and development opportunities to enhance volunteers' skills and knowledge.
  • Conduct a comprehensive skills audit of the volunteers to understand the skills and knowledge they possess.

Volunteer Management and Coordination:

  • Oversee and coordinate a team of 200 volunteers, working with Head of Departments to help scheduling and coordinating volunteer shifts using our new time & attendance rota management software Planday by Xero.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for volunteer queries, addressing any concerns or issues promptly.
  • Organising the Annual Volunteer Party, ad hoc thank you events, and facilitating other reward and recognition initiatives.
  • Oversee volunteer welfare and experience, including managing volunteer expenses.
  • Support other department heads to develop, recruit, and manage their own volunteer teams within their respective departments.
  • Liaise with other departments to assist and support their volunteering needs and work closely with Human Resources to ensure that all good practice policies and procedures are upheld.
  • Head up the Volunteer Steering Group, ensuring volunteer voices are heard and their contributions are recognised.

Program Expansion and Innovation:

  • Expand the volunteer program by identifying new volunteering opportunities, working with Corporate Volunteering
  • Collaborate with third-party volunteering organisations for bespoke one-off volunteering projects.
  • Stay up to date on trends in volunteering to ensure the program remains current and engaging.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driving licence and own vehicle to get to do from our remote location.
  • The position involves both office-based and on-site work, including outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
