Job description

About the role

Alongside AI Engineering, Software engineering is the core technical discipline in the Incubator. Whilst AI Engineers focus on the implementation and evaluation of Machine learning and LLM technology, software engineers are responsible for integrating that technology into working software that delights users and delivers against well-defined metrics.

This is a radical innovation team, and we hire team members who are collaborative, energetic, and are motivated to get stuff done, as well as being optimistic big picture thinkers. This role is perfect for somebody looking to operate in a start-up environment.

Key Responsibilities will include:

A technical lead in the incubator is responsible for:

The overall technical direction of one or more projects. These could be fully-fledged internal applications the incubator is building. Alternatively, they might be services were building in collaboration with other departments, where we work closely with technical counterparts in more of a technical architect capacity. In practice, you are likely to be writing and reviewing code daily.Ensuring that the members of your technical team are delivering to the best of their ability at all times, ensuring continued investment in the project and in their own skillsPlanning, sequencing and delivering technical work across the entire stack, from infrastructure (supported by the infrastructure team) to CI/CD pipelines, databases, backend frameworks, APIs and user interfaces, with appropriate levels of static analysis and automated testing to ensure quality and consistency.Liaising with non-technical colleagues to explain and advocate for the technical work of your team, especially in the context of planning work with product, research and design colleagues.Contributing to the learning and development culture of the whole team, both by sharing knowledge and facilitating the sharing of knowledge ( via pair programming).Support the effective management and performance of the team by promoting diversity, inclusion, regular, honest and constructive feedback, and supporting continuous improvement.

We build in Python, but expertise in other programming languages is acceptable.
