The Role and the Department

The International Office is responsible for:
  • The recruitment of international students to all areas of the university to meet institutional targets.
  • Supporting and managing the developing of international partnerships to raise the University's global profile and to support academic colleagues in developing international links and collaborations.
  • Managing the university's student mobility programmes (Turing and other exchange partnerships) to meet the University's student mobility targets.

The International Officer will support all aspects of the delivery of the University's Global Strategy, with particular responsibility for the achievement of international student recruitment.

With support from their line manager and International Office colleagues, the post holder will develop and disseminate expert knowledge, to assist the University's relationship management in market. Market responsibilities may change over time in line with the external student recruitment landscape and the priorities of Durham University.

This role will including 12 - 15 weeks per year of international travel, for periods of up to 3 weeks, which are likely to include unsociable hours, evenings and weekends.

Qualifications/Experience
1. Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience).
2. Ability to manage a complex workload with multiple deadlines and a flexible attitude to covering work for colleagues within a dynamic working environment often facing challenging and conflicting priorities.
4. Experience of implementing policies and procedures.
5. Experience of supervising/managing a team and/or a line management qualification.
6. Experience of being able to network effectively and develop strong and productive working relationships, to influence perceptions.
7. Experience of working, studying, or living overseas, or of significant independent travel.
8. Experience of engaging with international students and/or a good understanding of different cultures.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
9. Excellent spoken and written communication skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
10. Strong digital competence across a range of digital devices and apps including [digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, business systems].
11. Experience of providing relevant specialist advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues, including more senior colleagues. (This could be within recruitment, marketing, admissions, alumni relations, immigration or academic function).

23. A good understanding of the global higher education environment. Knowledge and enthusiasm for a wide range of issues relevant to international students contemplating study in the UK.
24. Experience of managing a budget.
25. A valid, clean drivers license.
