Oxford, United Kingdom Oxford University Press Full time
We have been a leading figure in publishing for more than 500 years. We have always been a forward-looking organization, maximizing the technology for the day, but the digital revolution is bringing enormous change, fast. That same spirit of adventure and entrepreneurialism is critical to our future success. In a fast-changing publishing landscape, OUP welcomes the inquisitive, the inventive, and the ambitious; people who challenge the conventional, and pioneer the possible.

About the Role

NB This is a fixed term contract for a minimum period of 6 months.

The Senior Commissioning Editor will be responsible for originating ideas and commissioning new titles (print and digital) as appropriate to the agreed children's publishing plan and UK and International business strategy. You will develop exciting and innovative projects to provide OUP with a compelling early years, picture book and fiction portfolio with strong global market and customer/consumer appeal. Your main responsibilities will include:

Identify and contract appropriate (new and existing) authors and contributors that are a strong fit for each title, working within appropriate budgets, to agreed commercial models, contractual terms and required timelines. Recruit and manage appropriate freelancers and packagers as required. Ensure that all contributors comply with OUP Ethics and Compliance policies.

Communicate with internal and external stakeholders (UK and International) to identify timelines and plan work to ensure timely and successful title delivery, contributing to an innovative and fast-paced global publishing pipeline.

Please refer to the enclosed job description for the detailed key accountabilities in this role.

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

To be successful in the role, you will ideally have:
  • Substantial commissioning experience across wide variety of children's projects and formats.
  • Solid understanding of the children's market, including key competitor insight (UK and International).
  • Demonstrable experience of concept development and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong track record of agent and author management.
  • Solid experience of project management and management of freelancers and packagers.
  • Excellent contract negotiation skills and knowledge of the Rights process (co-eds and sublicensing) and tailoring product to work for multiple markets.
  • Demonstrable experience in project set-up, managing publishing systems (such as Biblio) and running/understanding project P&Ls.
Benefits

We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind we offer 25 days' holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect to working patterns, dependent on role. We also have a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 12%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts.

Please see our Rewards and Recognition page for more information.
