ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Lecturer or Assistant Professor to join the Music team in the Department of Humanities. This appointment is for four years at either grade 6 (Lecturer) or grade 7 (Assistant Professor). We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach into at least two of the following areas: Music Education; Performance; Theory and Harmony. The candidate will be supported to develop their existing research profile.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Department of Humanities brings together around 80 academic staff and more than 800 students in English Literature, Creative Writing, English Language, American Studies, History and Music. The successful applicant will be joining four full-time Music colleagues, who are supported by wider research and teaching expertise that relates to music across the department.

Our current research expertise includes English music, c. 1500-1700; organology; instrumental and keyboard music to c. 1800 (including performance practice); ballads and popular song, 1500-1800; source studies (particularly editing); Scottish music, dancing masters and musicians of the eighteenth century; music in relation to literature, gender, politics (including court music, nationalism and protest); music and the medical humanities; and American popular music and culture. The Music Research Group provides a home for all those involved in music research across the University, including our lively community of PhD students. We have recently been successful in securing funding from the AHRC, the British Academy, and UKRI. Since 2022 the university is the permanent home for Jeremy Montagu's collection of musical instruments from around the world.

ABOUT YOU

We seek to appoint a candidate with an excellent research profile, whose work will complement the expertise of the existing Music team. You can find more information about the music courses h ere , and information about staff profiles and the Music research Group here .

You will hold a PhD or equivalent, and will already be developing a track record of publication or practice based research. You will be able to demonstrate your experience of relevant high-quality teaching, as well as flexibility and versatility. You will demonstrate a commitment to working beyond the academy in partnership with others.

We particularly welcome applications candidates from underrepresented communities in this area, including those from minority ethnic backgrounds.
