Job description

AI will play a crucial role delivering on the Government�s five missions, helping drive an era of sustained economic growth, transform how we deliver public services and boost living standards for people across the country.

DSIT�s AI Policy Directorate is at the heart of this work, helping enable society and UK businesses utilise AI technology, while guarding against the technology�s potential threats.

The roles advertised will be within DSIT�s AI regulation team, which sits within the AI Policy Directorate. Part of the team�s role is centred upon the Government�s plans to introduce legislation, putting legal requirements around the development and deployment of the most powerful AI models. The team also works across the wider regulatory landscape, coordinating across regulators, and supporting them to develop the necessary skills and capabilities to regulate AI effectively in their respective domains.

This work is at the cutting-edge of policy development, ensuring ethical AI development and innovation that will impact millions of people.

Person specification

Key responsibilities:

The roles will involve working with G7 leads on different areas of policy development and delivery.

Responsibilities may include:

Work with colleagues on complex, high profile policy development in support of future AI legislation.Support broader policy work in support of AI legislation, such as any future consultation, parliamentary work or working with legal teams on bill drafting.Establish governance processes to support future AI regulation; and existing work with regulators on AI. This will include liaising with the team responsible for any future Regulatory Innovation Office.Coordinate views on AI regulation, ensuring government and industry views are aligned wherever possible.Scope long-term policy solutions for supporting regulators� AI capabilities, working closely with analysts, HMT and relevant sponsor departments.Assess how the UK�s current regulatory framework aligns with AI technology; and what policy solutions are required to address gaps in the system.Design and deliver any regulator support or grant schemes, aimed to support existing regulators address AI threats.

Skills and experiences:

Essential

�A track record of proactively building positive, collaborative relationships, with the ability to communicate with a range of internal and external stakeholders.Excellent ability to distil and translate complex information for a range of stakeholders in both verbal and written forms, offering seniors clear decisions, often on ambiguous topics.Ability to work on fast-paced and evolving policy, prioritising effectively and taking responsibility for delivering timely and quality results.Attention to detail, with a focus on delivering high quality outcomes that meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders.Experience analysing a broad range of information from internal and external sources to make clear policy recommendations.

Desirable

An understanding of key themes in AI.Policy experience working on complex and high-profile issues, particularly in areas of technology policy and/or regulation.Experience of working in/with regulators and/or their sponsor departments in government. Experience working on legislation and/or with Parliament.Experience designing and delivering competitive grant funding schemes.

Office attendance
