The Office for Environmental Protection (the OEP) mission is to protect and recover the environment. Created by the Environment Act 2021, our role is to hold Government and public bodies to account. The OEP do this in several ways including reporting on progress against environmental targets, advising on changes to environmental laws and receiving complaints from the public which can lead to us taking enforcement action.�

This role is based in the OEP�s General Counsel directorate and we are looking for a temporary legal administrator to help support our busy team. This may be taken as a fixed term appointment or a secondment from your existing employer until March 2025.

Job description

We are looking for a Legal Administrator to undertake administrative and project management tasks to support our lawyers and legal researchers in providing legal advice and assistance across the OEP's business.

There will be opportunities to work across the range of matters dealt with by the OEP legal team. Depending on business demands and the successful candidate's particular skills and knowledge there will be opportunities to become involved in undertaking, with appropriate supervision, discrete aspects of the team�s substantive legal work.

The role could include:

Coordinating internal and external meetings and associated administration for the Legal team.Fielding internal enquiries made to the legal team, directing them to lawyers able to respond and monitoring follow-up actions, including to meet deadlines.Carrying out business administration as appropriate, including preparing meeting agendas, circulating papers and taking notes, tracking actions and updating/maintaining team documents (such as records of external legal advice received).Financial management, including preparing Purchase Orders, managing counsel�s fee notes and liaising with our Finance team over invoicing and payment of external legal advisors.​Assisting in instructing counsel and external solicitors, and providing administrative support in connection with such suppliers ( managing counsel's fee notes, maintaining external legal stakeholder information, and liaising with counsel's clerks).Setting up and maintaining internal filing systems, and providing suggestions for more streamlined ways of working.Assisting with the project management of legal tasks, including investigations, court proceedings and litigation case management, and as part of cross-directorate project teams to fulfil the OEP�s functions of scrutinising the implementation of environmental laws.Assisting in legal research, particularly on issues of environmental and public law.Supporting in handling complaints made to the OEP regarding public authorities' failures to comply with environmental law.Supporting the team in delivering training to other OEP staff in matters of environmental and public law and litigation/dispute resolution.
