About the Role

NB This is a fixed term contract for a minimum period of 6 months.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Development Editor to join the Children's Publishing Team on a fixed term contact to play a key role in Oxford Education. The Development Editor will be responsible for managing tiles across our picture book and fiction lists from concept to finished product, developing storylines, editing manuscripts, and briefing authors and illustrators. This is an exciting role in a dynamic team with responsibility for Oxford University Press's prestigious children's trade list.

Areas of focus will be:
  • Edit manuscripts, illustration (and other editorial) briefs, and run all proof stages, in line with strategy and product proposal, collating input from authors, agents and advisors. Implement structural editing and rewriting as required.
  • Maintaining/developing strong relationships with existing authors, illustrators and their agents. Source new talent to bring to the list and support in acquisitions.
  • Managing publishing for key brands and relationships with high-profile contributors
  • Presenting proposals, commercial information and product P&L at concepts and acquisitions meetings
  • Negotiating with agents and managing contracts
  • Managing freelancers, project budgets, and schedules to required timelines
  • Managing co-editions and working closely with the Rights team to ensure that the needs of our foreign publishing partners are met
  • Researching the market to keep abreast of competitors and trends
  • Presenting confidently at conferences and external-facing PR events and launches to promote product
  • Tracking performance of projects/titles/brands and contributing to identifying opportunities to drive growth

The Development Editor will have strong commercial insight and a deep understanding of the children's book market with previous experience in either trade picture books or fiction. They will be a creative editor with a keen eye for detail who is able to swiftly ascertain opportunities for acquiring, shaping and developing products and services to contribute to a rich and diverse reading portfolio.

Engaging across the Press and beyond, you will be working with theChildren's Publishing Manager (line manager), the children's team, UK and International Sales and Marketing teams, Rights team, Design and Production team, Primary and Secondary school publishing teams (school), Digital Platform management teams, and Market Research team. The Development Editor will also have external interactions with agents, authors, illustrators, freelance editors, industry/education experts and market researchers.

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

  • Editorial experience across a variety of trade projects, age groups and formats
  • Solid understanding of the children's book market - key competitor landscape and market trends
  • Strong track record of author/agent relationship management
  • Solid publishing project management
  • Creative flair and demonstrable experience of developing new concepts.
  • Ability to build trust with a range of stakeholders across an organization.
  • Experience briefing internal or external contributors and freelancers across a range of projects - including print and digital formats.
  • Good communication skills - ability to share and discuss complex information clearly and with confidence.
  • Proven organisational, collaboration, and project management skills.
