About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Engineering at Diamond enables our scientists to use synchrotron light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.

About the Role

This is a unique opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to work with the UK National Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility on a fixed term contract until March 2026.

The primary aim of the roll is to support a major cryo-sample transfer & storage automation system development. This will involve significant research, development and testing of components under liquid nitrogen.

The successful candidate will lead the engineering innovation & developments required to deliver sample holder formats, cassettes and shipping containers suitable for the automation upgrade. This process will include but is not limited to:

  • Providing creative, innovative, and adaptive solutions.
  • Producing engineering designs utilising CAD
  • Static Structural Analysis using analytical and FEA tools
  • Thermal/Cryogenic Analysis using analytical and FEA tools
  • Mechanical, Thermal & Motion system Test and Validation of prototypes
  • Management of project files containing all relevant project documentation
  • Leading Risks Assessment and pursuing solutions to mitigate risks.

About You

You are a skilled and experienced Mechanical Engineer with an Engineering degree or significant equivalent experience.

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate knowledge / experience of:

  • Designing systems that operate under challenging conditions such as Ultra High Vacuum and cryogenic temperatures
  • Engineering drawings and 3D modelling systems and familiar with modern manufacturing methods including additive manufacturing techniques.
  • Risk assessments and understand the requirements of such directives as the Machinery Directive.
  • You will have experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Good communication skills are critical, with the ability to discuss ideas, present possible solutions, debate and collaborate at all stages of the projects.
  • Hands-on research & development

Candidates who don't have direct prior experience of all these topics will be considered if they demonstrate a clear aptitude and understanding of the underlying physical principles at interview combined with a desire to learn.

This is an ideal development opportunity for a talented candidate without prior Senior Engineer Experience.
