Chair of the Welsh Refugee Coalition in Cardiff

Salary: Unremunerated, expenses paid.
Location: Remote role, based in Wales
Terms: Initial term 3 years
Hours: 10 – 15 hours per month
The role requires 10-15 hours per month, including a 1-hour monthly meeting with Executive Coalition Members and a 1-hour monthly meeting with the Coalition Coordinator. Additionally, there are quarterly 2-hour meetings for the Coalition. Engagement and representation of WRC at events and external meetings occur on an ad-hoc basis.
Background
The Welsh Refugee Coalition is a network of organisations working in Wales with people seeking sanctuary and refugees at all stages of their journey, and with the communities in which they live. We work together in the interests of people seeking sanctuary and refugees, to ensure that our limited resources can be used to best effect and to speak with one voice on policies and practises affecting people seeking safety in Wales.
Our Chair, Salah Rasool, has recently stepped down from this voluntary role, consequently, we are seeking a new voluntary Chair to support the Coalition's ongoing efforts.
A role description, person specification and nomination form for this voluntary post are below. We would like to receive nominations for this post from members of the Welsh Refugee Coalition. Nominees must agree to their names being put forward for this role.
Purpose of the post
The purpose of this job role is to stay informed about the Coalition's work, particularly its agreed policy and advocacy positions, and to support the Coalition Executive Group. The role involves representing and acting as an ambassador for the Coalition with external partners, serving as a media spokesperson, and chairing Quarterly Coalition meetings with key advocacy targets, including Ministers and civil servants.
Additionally, the job requires acting as a signatory on Coalition letters to key advocacy targets and representing the Coalition at high-profile events such as Sanctuary in the Senedd and Refugee Week. The role also includes providing support to task and finish groups on an ad hoc basis.
The ideal candidate will:
- Demonstrate a deep commitment to supporting sanctuary seekers and refugees
- Hold good interpersonal skills, particularly with cross-sector stakeholders
- Be experienced in leading strategic change
- Have the ability to handle difficult conversations, take the lead, and steer the group effectively

We hope to recruit a new Chair by the end of August 2024.
