Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom Scottish Water Full time
Senior Data Analyst - Microsoft Cloud Data Engineer
Scotland Flexible
Stepps, Glasgow

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

At Scottish Water, our mission is to safeguard Scotland's most vital resource - our water. We're dedicated to providing world-class water services while nurturing and protecting our environment every single day.

To help us continue this vital work, we're on the lookout for an enthusiastic and driven Microsoft (MS) Cloud Data Engineer to join our Strategic Investment Planning Team.

Our aim in Strategic Investment Planning is to turn data into valuable insights for the business. We are an ambitious team and make use of a range of techniques including statistics, mathematics, machine learning, data mining and data visualisation to derive value from data.

We leverage digital technology and cloud services to develop applications that enhance key business areas like asset management and water quality. Our collaborative approach involves working closely with stakeholders, to ensure that we solve the right problems and deliver useful outcomes. With a talented team and a commitment to continuous learning, we offer an environment where you can thrive and grow.

What you'll do

You'll perform in-depth analysis by manipulating both structured and unstructured data from various sources, handling tasks such as data preparation and merging. This will enable you to address key business challenges and enhance Scottish Water's understanding of complex issues.

You'll ensure the accuracy and reliability of your analysis by cross-checking and assuring data against different sources, while developing new solutions to advance our capabilities.

Additionally, you'll present your findings in an accessible manner, designing user-friendly interfaces and using visualisations to make complex information accessible to others. Your work will involve close collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders, co-creating tailored solutions that align with our ongoing transformation and long-term investment strategy.

In this role, you'll also contribute to infrastructure standards and change initiatives. By proposing service improvements and staying up to date with emerging technologies, you'll play a key role in driving forward our technological and analytical advancements.

You'll be a real team player, engaging in interactive and collaborative knowledge exchange, sharing your expertise and learning from your colleagues. You'll be curious to learn more about Scottish Water's business and the pivotal role of our Strategy & Regulation directorate.

What you'll need

You should be skilled at finding patterns and trends in real-world data, turning complex analytical results into clear, actionable business insights that are easy for others to understand, even if they aren't experts in analytics. Experience with MS Cloud design and support, especially with MS 365 and Azure, is also important.

You'll need a degree or equivalent experience in a numerate field like Statistics, Mathematics, Computing Science, or Software Engineering is required. Practical experience in the following areas - user interface design, interdependence and relationships in data, and measuring correlation - is essential.

You'll also have experience with programming languages such as R, Python, MATLAB, or other object-oriented languages, and a track record with MS Azure, SQL, Data Factory, and other cloud computing services.

On top of that, it's a plus (but not absolutely essential) if you have experience building data ingestion pipelines, are familiar with agile project delivery methods and DevOps, and have an understanding of UI/web development, Databricks, and Lakehouse.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it's not the only thing that matters. That's why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

You'll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there's our defined benefits, contribution pension scheme (the 'know-what-you'll-get-when-you-retire' kind), as well as life insurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 7. If you're new to Scottish Water, you'll join us on a starting salary of £41,000. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £51,970.

With Scottish Water's Hybrid Working policy, you can expect to spend a good portion of your time working from a location that suits you, including your home. However, some travel to Scottish Water offices will be necessary from time to time.

If you're interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we'll be accepting applications until midnight on Sunday 25th of August and we're aiming to do interviews for this role w/c 9th of September.

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don't worry - we'll ask your permission before starting these checks.

A few final things worth knowing...

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you're interested in this job, but don't tick all the boxes, apply anyway We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don't rule yourself out

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We're very used to making adjustments, so please don't be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it's important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don't already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Finally (finally), candidates who haven't submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won't need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.

We're here to help. Ask us anything at
