This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious and talented research leader in mechanical aspects of rotating electrical machines to join the Power Electronics, Machines and Drives Research Group (PEMC) at the University of Nottingham and become a core member of a team working on high power and high performance electrical machines. The PEMC has undergone a significant period of growth and now has over 200 members, with over 24 academics (including 9 full professors) and approximately 130 PhD students, post-doctoral research fellows and applications engineers. The group has world-class facilities for experimental work including approximately 3500m2 of research space and a construction and testing capability up to 5MW.

We are seeking a high-performing researcher to join and provide leadership to an expanding electrical machines mechanical team that are developing a range of very high performance electrical machines for aerospace propulsion and land-based power generation. The role holder will oversee the delivery of research programmes and capability projects to ensure the advancement of electrical machines capability in the group. This will include mechanical design and analysis, mechanical and electro-mechanical vibration, rotor dynamics, bearing systems, rotor retention systems and related topics.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in the field of Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, a proven record of high-quality research at international level, a proven industrial experience in the field of rotating machines, significant future research potential, and the ability to attract external funding and develop programmes of research. They will need to ensure mechanical functional excellence across the group, act as mechanical expert advisor to rotating electrical projects and lead on project delivery aspects. They will also have the ability to teach and train effectively at graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels, and have excellent interpersonal skills for team building. The successful candidate will support the development and delivery of internal and external training programs in mechanical design and analysis of electrical machines.

The post will be offered on a full-time hours per week), fixed term contract for 24 months. Job share arrangements may be considered.
