Research Assistant in gd T-cell Biology

Location: Centre for Inflammatory Disease, Department of Immunology and Inflammation, Hammersmith Campus, Imperial College London

Job Summary

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our team at the Hammersmith Campus of Imperial College London. You will work in the research group of Dr. Leticia Monin Aldama, a Lecturer in the Department of Immunology and Inflammation, whose research focuses on understanding gamma delta (gd) T cell development and activation.

You will work on an exciting new project funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences, aimed at understanding the mechanisms underlying the establishment of gd T cells in the gut, and exploiting their natural tropism for tissue targeting of adoptive cell therapies. This is a multidisciplinary project involving the use of retrogenic mouse models, multi-parameter flow cytometry, gene expression techniques (e.g. scRNAseq) and gene editing. As a research assistant, you will provide a range of technical support to group members under the overall direction and supervision of the PI. You will perform a range of wet-lab techniques, including genotyping of transgenic mouse strains, molecular cloning, cell culture and flow cytometry, as well as the organisation, management and maintenance of the laboratory and its equipment. You will also contribute to the day-to-day supervision of students hosted in the lab (BSc and MSc). The post-holder will be expected to maintain the day-to-day running of the lab and undertake general lab duties, including maintenance of stocks and consumables.

The ideal candidate will have experience in molecular biology, including molecular cloning and general immunological assays, including cell culture, flow cytometry and in vivo models. Additional training in specific techniques will also be available in the laboratory. The successful candidate will have a degree and/or MSc in immunology or a related subject, or equivalent laboratory experience, together with excellent organisation and communication skills. The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently, and as part of a team; will present their work at group and departmental meetings and will contribute to publications.

Duties and responsibilities

This role requires a broad knowledge of immunology, and you will be a key member of a team that aims to understand how T cells establish themselves and respond to the body's barriers. You will perform wet-lab work, both as part of a team and independently, performing PCR, molecular cloning, flow cytometry and cell culture. You will also analyse data, and you will be expected to present your work at group and departmental meetings.

Your main duties are described below:

  • To be proactive in planning and conducting the research work and, to perform data analysis, with appropriate supervision.
  • To keep up with the literature in your field of research.
  • To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times.
  • To maintain accurate, organised, and complete records of all experimental work and data analysis.
  • To present and discuss results at lab meetings and prepare regular internal reports.
  • To present findings to colleagues, collaborators and at conferences.
  • To assist in the day-to-day maintenance of the lab, including maintaining stocks and mouse genotyping.

Essential requirements

  • BSc/BA/Master's degree in immunology, or a related area (e.g. biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology), or equivalent laboratory experience.
  • Experience of research, in a technical or scientific role.
  • You will be joining a collaborative research environment, and so will need good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience in molecular cloning techniques.
  • The ability to prioritise your work in response to deadlines, to use your initiative and being able to work independently as well as part of the team are all essential.

Desirable requirements

  • Have experience in PCR, cell culture, flow cytometry and/or in vivo models.
  • Having successfully completed PIL-A/B/C or Module K training.

Further Information

This is a fulltime, fixed term position for 18 months with an opportunity for extension, subject to funding availability based at Hammersmith Campus (East Acton).
