London, Greater London, United Kingdom UK Dementia Research Institute Full time

Country United Kingdom Application Deadline 24 May :00 (Europe/London) Type of Contract Temporary Job Status Full-time Hours Per Week 35 Offer Starting Date 24 Jun 2024 Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme? Not funded by an EU programme Reference Number MED04551 Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? Dementia is the biggest health challenge of our century.

To date there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap.

The UK DRI at Imperial brings together researchers from diverse backgrounds with fresh perspectives, drawing on the university's unique strengths, resources and focus on science, engineering, medicine and business.

The team recognises that the challenges of dementia demand new concepts, new approaches and a diverse range of new research tools and directions.

We are recruiting a Research Assistant in the research group of Dr Cynthia Sandor (Edmond J Safra Lecturer in Parkinson's Disease Research, UKRI Future Leader Fellow, UK DRI Group Leader) for a project identifying earlier and more accessible biomarkers for Parkinson's disease, including digital biomarkers and blood biomarkers.

The candidate will evaluate the predictive value of these biomarkers extracted from deeply phenotyped cohorts and biobanks by providing probabilistic forecasts for future medical events associated with the risk and progression of Parkinson's disease.

This will involve data-driven feature extraction and the training and optimization of various machine learning models.

The research will focus on analysing data from deeply phenotyped cohorts of patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PPMI, UK Tracking, UK) and from different biobanks (UK Biobank, All of Us, FinnGen, NHS-CPRD).

Dementias represent one of the greatest medical and economic challenges facing our society today.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) – a national, distributed network of centres – was created to address these challenges.

You will be a member of the UK DRI, based in the Department of Brain Sciences at Imperial and work collaboratively with Professor Payam Barnaghi (UK DRI Care Research & Technology Centre).

We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic researcher who can take on a challenging role with considerable scope for independent scientific achievement and personal growth.

You will play a central role in developing the neuroscience and machine learning work, and will be highly motivated and interested in the development and application of computational approaches to identify earlier biomarkers in Parkinson's disease.

Candidates will be supported in their career development.

Imperial and the UK DRI encourage continued professional development and you will be encouraged to develop skills in emerging computational approaches.

Research Field Neurosciences Education Level Master Degree or equivalent

A relevant master's degree in Neuroscience, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related disciplines with a focus on machine learning, deep learning, or data science.

Proficiency in machine learning and computational modelling.
This post is full time, fixed term until 31 March 2028.

Imperial College London is the UK's only university focussed entirely on science, engineering, medicine and business and we are consistently rated in the top 10 universities in the world.

You will find our main London campus in South Kensington, with our hospital campuses located nearby in West and North London.

We also have Silwood Park in Berkshire and state-of-the-art facilities in development at our major new campus in White City.

We work in a multidisciplinary and diverse community for education, research, translation and commercialisation, harnessing science and innovation to tackle the big global challenges our complex world faces.

It's our mission to achieve enduring excellence in all that we do for the benefit of society – and we are looking for the most talented people to help us get there.

In addition to the above, employees are required to observe and comply with allCollege policies and regulations.

We therefore encourage candidates to apply irrespective of age, disability, marriage or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion and belief, gender reassignment, sex, or sexual orientation.
