The Intensive Positive Behaviour Support Team (IPBS) is a highly specialist multi-disciplinary team which provides intensive support for children and young people up to the age of 18 years who are at risk of a hospital admission due to risks around behaviours of concern.

The team covers a wide geographical area within the North East and North Cumbria (NENC) area, working with Children and Young People's locality teams in each area, offering both a consultation model and intensive clinical input where necessary.

The IPBS Team provides support in three pathways; Children and Young People who have a learning disability, Autistic Children and Young People, and Inpatient (Ferndene).

The team works as an integrated multidisciplinary CYPS Specialist team providing intensive Positive Behavioural Support to young people who are displaying complex behavioural presentations of concern.

This includes carrying out observations and assessments, consultation to community teams, implementing skills development and other specialist interventions based on the needs of the young person.

IPBS provides an enhanced assessment and implementation pathway in addition to core assessments carried out within CYPS locality teams, and is an active member of the CNTW CYS PBS Clinical Network, as well as excellent links with other IPBS teams within the NENC region.

This is an exciting time for the team, as it is in the process of expansion, following a successful period of piloting a clinical pathway for Autistic Young People.

This is now going to become an integrated part of the IPBS offer within this CYPS Specialist Service and will involve the development of innovative practice and continuous service development.

There are two strands of service development planned over the next year; integrating with local Special Education expertise, and developing an earlier PBS parent support offer, giving opportunities to develop the service through the Learning Disability and Autism Provider Collaborative workstream.

This brings the two major providers CNTW and TEWV together to develop innovative practice in line with the Long Term NHS Plan, within the NENC Learning Disability, Mental Health and Autism Partnership.

The earlier parent support offer will involve taking the learning from the Autism pilot to develop an earlier PBS intervention, and will involve innovative development, a pilot and evaluation phase, and then a strategic element to plan for sustainable delivery across the NENC footprint in the future.
