An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialty Doctor based at the Child, Young People and Family Centre in Newtown, Mid Wales, which is one of two child centres providing multidisciplinary services alongside experienced paediatric nursing and allied health professionals. You will join two highly motivated, consultant community paediatricians covering South and Mid Powys and enjoy high levels of continuity of care and job satisfaction.

Powys is a large county covering approximately a quarter of Wales on the border of Shropshire and Herefordshire. Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council. MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Entry on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining a UK CCT for General and community Paediatrics
  • A CCT or CESR-CP in General paediatrics without Community Child Health (CCH) is only acceptable if the applicant can show how they have acquired the Level 3 CCH competencies.

Desirable criteria

  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or other higher degree DCH, DCCH, MBA or other relevant diplomas

Clinical experience, Knowledge and skills

Essential criteria

  • Wide experience, knowledge and skills in Community Paediatrics including expertise in complex neurodisability.
  • Knowledge of child protection and experience in managing child abuse and neglect
  • Level 3 or higher formal training in Child Protection
  • Experience of working with multidisciplinary and multiagency teams
  • Competency in the assessment of paediatric development.
  • A good understanding of the special educational needs system
  • Usually, at least 2 years General Professional Training in paediatrics. Usually 5 years Higher Specialist Training, including 3 years in Community Paediatrics. Training is competency based, but a certain level of experience is expected.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience or training in one or more of the following areas: Child mental health, public health, general practice, adoption and fostering.
  • Formal training in the use of developmental assessment tools, i.e. Griffiths, SOGS or similar

Management

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge of the role of clinical governance in current clinical practice Understanding of clinical risk management Ability to mentor staff
  • Understanding of management issues including medical management; clinical governance, service planning and quality improvement
  • Willingness to lead service developments

Desirable criteria

  • An understanding of NHS management responsibilities of Consultants.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage e.g. project work; mentoring junior staff
  • Demonstrated ability to take on a leadership role

Teaching, audit and research

Essential criteria

  • Experience of teaching Students, medical and other staff in a variety of settings
  • Demonstration of participation in audit and understanding of the audit process
  • Demonstration of willingness to participate in research.

Desirable criteria

  • Interest in and commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Attendance at a 'training the trainers' or similar course
  • Demonstrate ability to design and complete an audit project
  • Demonstrate ability to design and complete a research project.

Professional Interests

Essential criteria

  • Childhood disability including assessment of neurodevelopmental conditions.

Desirable criteria

  • Membership of appropriate professional societies, i.e. BACCH, BACD, BAAF, Welsh Paediatric Society etc.
  • Completed training and knowledge of relevant assessment tools, i.e. familiar with the use of Conner's questionnaires, ADOS and/or 3Di training or similar

Personal Skills

Essential criteria

  • Teamwork Reliability and good personal organisational skills with a flexible attitude and ability to recognise own limitations
  • Communication skills Ability to work within multidisciplinary and multiagency teams
  • Supervision Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with children, their parents and with colleagues. Good written communication skills.
  • Leadership Ability to lead the development of services.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working within multidisciplinary and multiagency teams
  • Knowledge of another language, i.e. Welsh, Polish
  • Experience of supervision of junior medical staff and relevant staff in other disciplines.
  • Experience of service development
