As a Senior Analyst, you will lead the implementation of business-as-usual activities, regularly monitoring and analysing market evidence, handling large data sets, and issuing new information requests to third parties.

You will provide support and guidance to junior colleagues, ensuring quality assurance and upward review of their work.

Your high-quality analysis will proactively identify evidence to assess the impacts of retail policies and regulations on the market and consumers.

You will also identify opportunities to use analysis to progress decisions, lead on written deliverables such as analytical reports and briefings, and manage unplanned requests concerning the team's data sets.

Engagement with internal and external stakeholders is key to this role.

You will scope and agree on analytical input and evidence necessary for monitoring and policy purposes, and ensure timely and accurate provision of insights and analysis.

Job description

As the UK's regulator for the energy industry, Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe and sustainable energy supply.


As a Senior Analyst you will be undertaking regular monitoring and reporting on competition and/or customer protection indicators and on the assessment of the impacts of retail energy policies and regulation.

This will include undertaking analysis on allotted activity, providing advice and guidance to Analyst colleagues in the analysis they undertake, and supporting the Team Manager in delivery of activity.

Successful candidates will initially be deployed in the Consumer & Compliance Intelligence team, working closely with other teams to monitor the retail energy market to establish a sound evidence base for decision-making and policy-making.

This team sits within the Retail Market Intelligence and Stability (RMIS) portfolio that forms part of the Financial Resilience and Controls (FRC) Directorate.

Key Responsibilities


Provide day to day leadership on the implementation of BAU activity to regularly monitor and analyse market evidence, including handling large data sets, undertaking existing activity, and issuing new information requests to third parties.

Provide support and guidance to junior colleagues acting as an escalation point for advice, quality assurance, and upward review of work undertaken.

Undertake high quality analysis and proactively identify applicable evidence to assess the impacts of retail policies and regulation on the market and consumers.

Identify opportunities to use analysis, including developing new frameworks or using established ones, to progress decisions.
Lead on written deliverables (internal and external) such as analytical reports, briefings to senior managers and regulatory decisions.
Manage and coordinate with colleagues the delivery of specific unplanned requests concerning the teams' data sets.
Engage with internal stakeholders to scope and agree any analytical input/evidence necessary for monitoring and policy purposes.

Engage with external stakeholders including other government departments, suppliers, and consumer bodies to ensure the timely and accurate provision of insights and analysis, where appropriate.

Key Outputs and Deliverables

Use your expertise to support on monitoring and reporting on a range of supplier consumer and market performance data.

Use your expertise to understand the complexities of the energy retail market, licence conditions, and reporting frameworks used to collect and analyse data from licensees.

Collaborate closely with other teams and identify interdependencies.

Seek opportunities to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of data collection and analysis through use of data analysis tools and technology.

Support and cooperate on policy development and other decision making activity as required.

Essential Criteria

Experience of providing analytical input or assurance into consultancy, government, policy, regulatory or energy sector projects that deliver benefits for consumers, communities, or society (LEAD CRITERIA)

Excellent ability to coordinate others and design efficient and robust processes such as information requests to third parties and routine analysis of large data sets.

Strong analytical skills and ability to use a range of analytical approaches to add value to the policy development process.

Includes working with uncertainty to solve problems, critical thinking, formulating pragmatic options, and presenting actionable information to decision-makers.
Effective in the use of data management and manipulation tools to produce insightful analysis such as Excel.

Excellent oral and written communication and influencing skills, with an ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Experienced in presenting complex issues to provide insight and understanding to non-expert audiences.
