Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Balfour Beatty Full time

About the role

Our work matters to millions. It'll matter to you too. Join our Enabling Functions team as a Finance Business Partner and you'll be a big part of fascinating, complex, varied and meaningful work

Balfour Beatty has twelve UK Enabling Functions supporting and servicing the UK Strategic Business Units (SBUs) and the UK-based Group Head Office (GHO).

The UK Enabling Functions Finance team is responsible for financial control, cost management, monthly reporting, budgeting and forecasting processes and decision support for a cost base of over 140m and a head count of over 1,300.

What you'll be doing

As a Finance Business Partner you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for the month end close and reporting process, ensuring reporting deadlines are met and submissions are accurate, and the results are understood within the function and the UK SBUs, where appropriate. This also includes ensuring there is effective financial control over the balance sheet, including cash control.
  • Responsibility for the budgeting and forecasting process and for ensuring there is robust financial challenge to what is submitted.
  • Providing an all-round business partner service to the function leadership team and ensuring ownership is taken for fixing any finance related issues affecting the function.
  • Ensuring the finance agenda is driven within the wider functional organisation and that the UK leadership is aware of finance goals and has the information it requires to track against these with regular finance reviews.
  • Playing a leadership role in identifying cost savings and ensuring there are plans in place for these to be tracked to completion.
  • Ensure that finance is involved and represented on key decisions that affect cash, costs or have any impact on financial control and that we become a trusted business partner to the UK leadership team.
  • Ensuring that, where necessary, costs are accurately allocated to the correct SBU and/or project as part of the annual budgeting process.
  • Given the amount of change on-going within the Enabling Functions in the short to medium term, there will be a need to be able to ensure that the finance service offered adapts and is pro-active in this changing environment.
  • Encouraging and supporting the business to be more financially accountable by providing support and coaching to improve financial confidence.

Who we're looking for

Skills and experience required:

  • Qualified accountant (ACA/ACMA/CIMA or equivalent).
  • Strong accounting and month end experience, with a sound understanding of all aspects of balance sheet control and reconciliation.
  • Strong knowledge of the key finance processes (O2C, P2P, AP2P) and how it is possible to optimise these with a view to reducing costs.
  • Practical knowledge and experience of managing a budgeting and reforecasting process.
  • Previous business partnering experience.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience of identifying and implementing process improvement.
