The Role

Surrey and Sussex Public Order training unit are seeking to recruit two full time police staff trainers. You will be highly motivated, with a proven ability to work closely with other team members.

The role will include responsibility for the training and delivery of key disciplines. This will primarily involve the delivery of Taser and Public Order training but could also involve the delivery of training in other areas also.

Job Purpose: To support and promote the concepts of quality of service and diversity in policing in line with Force policies and guidance.

To facilitate the development and maintenance of an efficient training service to the Force by planning and delivering training events to meet identified needs particularly in relation to Public Order, Taser and CBRN.

To provide professional specialist advice across both collaborative forces.

There are two full time vacancies. At least one of these must be based at Kingstanding in Sussex but there may be the opportunity for the other vacancy to be based at Mt. Browne in Guildford (through agreement). Please indicate preferred working location on your application.

Regardless of core training base, the successful applicants will be expected to deliver training across both force areas based on the training demand.

Key Responsibilities

The delivery of core training in line with the requirements set by the College of Policing.

You will work closely in a team environment in order to identify training needs within various aspects of specialist operations training.

You will research and develop new training approaches in order to improve the cost effectiveness and quality of staff training throughout the Force.

You will monitor the success of delivered training in achieving the levels of knowledge and/or skills intended in order to modify them to reflect the requirements of the students.

Where required, you will hold tutorials with students to discuss their individual progress and where necessary, you will counsel them so as to enhance their rate of development to promote their learning.

You will recognise and tackle inappropriate behaviour displayed in the training environment in a professional manner in line with the code of ethics, to ensure that Force standards of behaviour are maintained.

You will test, evaluate and make recommendations about specialist equipment in order to support the effective deployment of operational staff officers in identified roles.

You will assist the department with the monitoring of kit and equipment that the team are responsible for ensuring it is fit for purpose and managed effectively.

Skills & Experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

You must have the ability to complete training as a Specially Trained Officer (Taser).

You must have the ability to complete training as a level 2 public order officer. Previous experience as a level 2 officer whilst desirable is not essential as full training will be provided to develop these skills.

It is desirable that you already hold a training qualification that meets the College of Policing Instructor / Trainer Standard or be capable of working towards and achieving a suitable training qualification.

You must possess well-developed interpersonal and communication skills together with the ability to facilitate the development of others in these areas.

You must have the ability to work accurately under pressure, managing your time effectively and meeting timescales.

It is essential that you have a calm and objective approach to challenge, including the ability to provide feedback to officers of a higher rank.

It is essential that you have the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

You will require flexibility to meet the demands of the role which may include working outside of core working hours.

You must be willing to undertake specialist courses to meet the demands of the department and Force, as deemed appropriate by the department head. This will involve the attendance and successful completion of residential courses elsewhere in the country.
