The role: We are currently looking for a Linux Systems Administrator to join our rapidly expanding software and control systems team in Portchester. Our team is responsible for developing a broad range of software solutions across our vehicles, technologies, and customer systems.

As the Linux System Administrator, you will primarily be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of our development infrastructure and our developer endpoints. Our work requires a lot of specialist infrastructure, which is a combination of off the shelf and custom solutions. You will be required to maintain and develop these solutions and interface with the corporate IT team to ensure we meet the necessary compliance needs and are correctly joined to the wider business. As our vehicle deployments are also Linux-based, there are also plenty of opportunities in this area too

Role responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Routine maintenance of Linux servers, workstations, and other endpoints, primarily in a RHEL or Centos environment (other distributions are used in some rare cases).
  • Management of the Linux workstations for the software team using Puppet and Red Hat Satellite.
  • Technical support for users of Linux workstations and other endpoints (most of these users are software engineers or other members of the software team).
  • Liaise with the local IT department on broader issues, for example Linux servers providing capabilities to parts of the business outside of the software team.
  • Support with the development and improvement of the software build and deployment system, including administration of tools such as Gitlab, Artifactory, Cobbler, and Kubernetes.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and configuration control activities relating to how much infrastructure is defined as code (IaC).
  • Advise software and commissioning engineers on the design, integration, and deployment of Linux systems on vehicle control and shoreside infrastructure.
  • Work with customers, sales, system engineering, and other appropriate areas to assist in defining and breaking down detailed requirements.
  • Deal with the unique challenges that arise in the emerging area of autonomous vehicle control system design.

Essential Skills / Qualifications / Experience:

  • Comfortable working in a Linux environment and administrating Linux systems.
  • Administrating systems such as Gitlab, Artifactory, Cobbler, Kubernetes, etc.
  • Use of Git or other similar version control system.
  • Comfortable writing detailed design documents and presenting them for review.
  • Experience with Ansible, Puppet, and or RedHat Satellite.
  • Analytical.
  • Adaptability and able troubleshoot problems.
  • Team player.

Desirable Skills / Qualifications / Experience:

  • Some experience administrating Kubernetes and/or VMware Estates.
  • Bash and/or Python scripting experience.
  • Exposure to basic Active Directory administration.
  • Code Review using Gitlab or other similar system.
  • Understands the software development lifecycle.
  • Use of Jira or other similar issue-tracking systems.
  • Use of Confluence or other similar wiki system.
