Institute of Health Research and Innovation
The Institute of Health Research and Innovation was constituted in February 2018. It is embedded in the Faculty of Science, Health and the Environment and focuses on the two broad themes of Biomedical Sciences and Rural Health and Wellbeing.

Health research at the university has significantly grown since 2016, thanks to various external sources of funding for projects of European and international scale. In 2021, 28% of our research was classed as world-leading, a substantial increase over the 17% equivalent score in 2014. The research themes are currently being strategically conjoined to form an interdisciplinary and cross-partnership One Health strand.

Biomedical Sciences @UHI
The advertised post is associated with our Biomedical Sciences team based at the brand new, state-of-the-art Life Sciences Innovation Centre (LSIC) on Inverness Campus. The building is jointly owned by Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE), with a focus on collaborations between new and developing companies situated in HIE's incubator space in LSIC and across the campus, and UHI Biomedical Sciences researchers. Our research is divided into two disciplines, Genetics & Immunology, based at the nearby An Lochran building on Inverness Campus, and Medical Nanotechnology in LSIC. A burgeoning theme within UHI is the concept of One Health – the close interaction of human health with animal and environmental health. In particular, we are interested in reducing use of antibiotics in hospitals and the community by reducing transmission of diseases through the use of cutting-edge antimicrobial medical nanotechnology. In addition, we have ongoing projects to reduce pharmaceutical pollution through novel hospital wastewater treatment.

Biomedical Sciences teams also have a range of projects relating to melanoma, mesothelioma and canine cancers, as well as a programme of studies to identify the causes of schizophrenia. In addition, we have a collaborative project with several universities and companies to design and test novel materials to prevent thrombosis and vasospasm associated with medical devices, a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with a company within LSIC to develop new diagnostic tests, and a project to develop a new treatment to reduce deaths associated with drug overdose.

Research Assistant
This post provides support for potentially any of the projects indicated above, but most specifically to those relating to One Health. As detailed in the Person Specification and Job Description, the post requires a diligent individual, cable of working to short deadlines using a wide range of laboratory techniques to support a breadth of projects with academic and industry partners.

This role requires a background in a scientific field relevant to biomedical sciences, and an understanding of the functioning and maintenance of a laboratory. There is an expectation that the postholder will have basic laboratory skills, such as making up solutions and drug concentrations and running commercial assays; experience in tissue culture and/or microbiology would be an advantage. In-house training in specialist techniques (e.g. flow cytometry, electrochemistry, platelet aggregometry, myography, HPLC) will be provided where necessary.

£26,452 to £28,067 per annum.
