Job SummarySTAR Exeter is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Director of Studies to help manage and develop our year-round adult English language school in Exeter city centre. The position is full-time and permanent, starting in August 2024.


STAR Exeter is a year-round English language school which aims to provide quality training to equip its students with the skills and knowledge they need to work towards their goals and develop their interests and personalities.

We have a weekly continuous enrolment of students, and teach general English, IELTS exam preparation classes, and run an annual International Foundation Programme.

The main responsibilities and duties of the role are:

  • To coordinate and support permanent and short-term STAR Exeter teachers
  • Undertake weekly planning of the timetable and class scheduling
  • Coordinate, facilitate and lead regular training and workshops
  • Coordinate teacher observation and appraisal / evaluation programme
  • Chair and contribute to weekly staff meetings, taking minutes and acting on any issues
  • Arrange and provide cover for teachers on holiday or otherwise away
  • Recruitment of EFL teachers and subject specific tutors depending on current requirements
  • Coordinate the delivery of the International Foundation Programme
  • Maintain teaching and classroom resources
  • Manage preparation for accreditation inspections, alongside the Director
  • To remain compliment and uptodate with all British Council accreditation criteria
  • To promote and safeguard the welfare of students
  • To implement the daytoday management of all health and safety matters and safeguarding policies in accordance with current criteria (in conjunction with the School Manager)


The Director of Studies will also be required to teach classes depending on the requirements of the timetable each week.

This is typically in winter-time only during quieter periods, or for short periods of cover.

Desirable criteria:

  • Proven leadership experience in a yearround accredited language school
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience in teaching or managing EAP / Presessional / Foundation courses
  • Flexibility and strong problemsolving skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Ability to manage own diary and priorities
  • Knowledge of British Council accreditation criteria
