About the role

Leadership and oversight of the Mayor's work in sport and physical activity for social outcomes for children and young people in London, with a focus on its positive impact on mental health, personal development, social connectedness, and employability for improved life chances.

To manage the ongoing implementation of the Sport and Physical Activity portfolio, with an emphasis on positive outcomes for underserved young Londoners. This includes our flagship Go London Collaboration, our sport, youth voice, and leadership programmes funded by the London Violence Reduction Unit, delivering our partnership ambitions with the NBA and NFL, and leading on thought leadership for the sector. The role will require close working with other policy teams within the Civil Society and Sport Unit and across the wider GLA, the London Violence Reduction Unit as well as senior-level stakeholder relationship management and includes effective line performance management of the Sport team to ensure successful individual and team learning, development, and performance.

In this role, you are required to contribute to the wider work of the Sport and Youth team in support of the London Recovery missions, the London Partnership Board, Major Sports Events, and the strategic ambitions of the GLA. Using the power or sport, you will play an active role in listening, convening, and codesigning interventions with young people and the sector that address emerging needs, and systemic challenges, and support the aspirations of underserved young Londoners. What your day will look like ·Bi-weekly Sports Team meeting, outlining progress, priorities, actions, and timeline.

  • Meeting with the governance lead for advice on your draft decision paper.
  • Attend meeting with University partner to discuss initial findings of early years research.
  • Focus time – Go London application assessments
  • Meeting with VRU weekly programme catch up.

    Skills, knowledge, and experience

    To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:

    • Significant knowledge and experience in managing and monitoring a portfolio of programmes, including resource management, financial planning and forecasting, project planning, risk and appraisal, internal approval and external contract development and management, and measuring outcomes.
    • Considerable experience in managing and building trust with high-profile partners and stakeholders together with knowledge and understanding of, and ability to operate and collaborate successfully at a senior level in, a complex organisation and/or fast pacing political environment.
    • Experience in producing and overseeing compelling high-quality written reports, briefings, monitoring information, and developing assets to profile and communicate the successes to different audiences.
    • Experience in the field of sport and physical activity, youth, and civil society, together with an understanding of the challenges facing the sport and physical activity sector.
    • Knowledge of the Mayor's powers and the role of the GLA and how to translate changing political agendas into tangible actions that benefit the diverse and changing needs of Londoners.
    • A record of managing, motivating, and inspiring a team, nurturing talent, ambition, learning, and development, and addressing gaps in knowledge, performance, and capability.
