We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated (Senior) Legal Counsel to support our fast-growing international offshore wind business at RWE.

You will act as a solicitor regarding real estate matters.

Your focus will be supporting real estate activities for our onshore cable routes, onshore substation, service buildings as well as port facilities and general project focused development activities.

You will predominantly support our projects and assets in the United Kingdom (focus: England & Wales) , Ireland, but you may be asked to support other international activities too on a generic basis.

The role is allocated to the Projects and Regulatory Law team within RWE Offshore Wind Legal and you will report to the head of this team.

You will work alongside other members of the RWE Offshore Wind Legal Team and closely cooperate with other departments to deliver a holistic and streamlined service to the business of RWE Offshore Wind.

This role provides you with the opportunity to work on high profile, complex renewable energy projects and transactions. You will deliver commercial and solution-oriented legal advice to our offshore wind business.

Key responsibilities

  • Providing legal advice in a timely manner on all real estate activities, including land securing, but other transactions as well, eg landlord and tenant crossing agreements, co-operation agreements etc
  • Overseeing offshore real estate transactions from cradle to grave as necessary, whether that comprises undertaking transactions personally or, if required to involve external lawyers, supporting them
  • Working closely with the offshore development team and projects in the UK and Ireland, and other stakeholders, e.g. offshore construction & operations teams, M&A team and finance teams
  • Working across the international RWE Renewables' business to deliver a holistic and streamlined legal service
  • To the extent, the involvement of external law firms is necessary, coordinating their support of individual projects, eg ensuring the scope of work they are undertaking is appropriate and necessary, that the fees being paid are competitive and the service being provided is as required by the business, ensuring best value for the projects
  • Participating in document standardization and process improvement initiatives
  • Innovative thinking, developing non-standard and customized legal solutions when needed for bespoke transactions

Your Profile

  • Will be competent to carry out and have experience of:
  • real estate development work in an offshore setting
  • title investigation and reporting
  • site assembly and cable route work
  • landlord and tenant work
  • access agreements and other ancillary land agreements
  • general real estate matters e.g. freehold acquisitions, easements/wayleaves, covenants, asset management etc.
  • corporate support and real estate finance work; and
  • some experience of joint ventures and co-operation agreements
  • Qualified as a Solicitor or Barrister in England is a pre-requisite
  • Experience in PQE in non-contentious real estate
  • Must have experience from in-house, international or national top tier law firm or real estate/energy specialist law firm
  • Experience in the above and the following would be beneficial
  • renewable energy sector work
  • knowledge of the planning/consenting process would be beneficial
  • knowledge and experience of acquiring and vesting land through compulsory purchase powers and related procedures
  • some shipping knowledge and port work would be nice but not essential
  • large industrial development work;
  • agricultural land
  • Knowledge of Irish and Scottish real estate matters would be valuable, and
  • Technically knowledgeable and able to give effective, pragmatic advice succinctly and in a timely manner.
