An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Associate to join the School of Health Sciences to work with Dr Carole Gardener (Senior Research Associate) and Professor Morag Farquhar (Professor of Palliative Care Research). You will join a project seeking to adapt a health care intervention that enables delivery of person-centred care to people with progressive conditions in mainstream services (SNAP – the Support Needs Approach for Patients: ) so that it can be used in prison settings. Increasing numbers of prisoners have progressive health conditions increasing their need for supportive, palliative, and end-of-life care. Former prisoners and prison nurses say SNAP could work in prisons, if adapted for imprisoned patients and the potential challenges of prison settings.

Working in collaboration with EP:IC (an established prison research company) the project will (1) conduct a literature review on involving imprisoned patients in conversations about their needs, (2) adapt the SNAP Tool with imprisoned patients/former prisoners (focus groups/interviews), (3) explore with clinicians, prison staff and imprisoned patients/former prisoners how SNAP might work in prisons (workshops), (4) try the prison-adapted SNAP in a small number of prisons to find the best ways to test it across a wider range of prisons (feasibility study), and (5) hold a national stakeholder roundtable to generate policy recommendations and impact strategies. You will contribute to all five components of the project. The project is funded by the Marie Curie Research Grants Scheme.

You will have a postgraduate level qualification, equivalent qualification or experience in a relevant research area. You will also have knowledge and experience of working with vulnerable populations and discussing sensitive topics, and experience of conducting literature reviews and qualitative studies. You will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to analyse and interpret data and work collaboratively. Travel to prisons will be required.

This part-time post (0.6FTE) is available from 1 September 2024 for a fixed term period of 2 years, working flexibility in a hybrid-working model. Appointment will be subject to a criminal record check at Basic level from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
