Bridgend, Bridgend county borough, United Kingdom Seren Books Full time

Salary:
£23,000 per annum, pro rata, full-time (some flexible working hours possible)

Contract: Fixed term position until 31 December 2024

Location: Hybrid – majority working from Bridgend will be required

Deadline: 10 am on Monday 17 June 2024

Seren Books is at a moment of change. We are developing a new strategic framework and business plan to diversify and redistribute decision-making, framed by a clear set of priorities and values. We are aiming at a stronger company identity, and a more diverse readership and writer community.

About the role

We are looking to appoint an individual to work with us as a 6-month fixed-term Desk Editor, learning the book trade in Wales from us and upskilling in proof-reading and copy-editing via a dedicated and relevant mentor and a short training course.

The Desk Editor will contribute to the new fiction and non-fiction commissioning processes, drawing on their knowledge and research of industry and market trends, and Seren's target reader and writer profiles to co-curate the 2025/2026 Publications List. They will also support Seren in developing its internal practices with equality, diversity and inclusivity in mind.

With their mentor's guidance, the Desk Editor will lead on a budget for 4 fiction and non-fiction titles by writers who have lived experience of racism, ableism and/or poverty to develop new, culturally diverse content. Commissioned via a well-crafted open call-out, the 4 successful writers will be supported to develop their pitches into publication proposals, to be tabled at Seren's December 2024 Publications Sub-committee meeting.

Responsible to: Interim CEO

Responsible for:
Planned internships

Who we think you might be

You might be someone with a knack for building relationships and connecting with people. You're outstanding with the written word and have a very keen eye for detail. You may have lived experience of racism, ableism and/or poverty, and you will certainly have a strong belief in widening access to the arts and have a passion for rebalancing societal opportunity and enterprise. Supporting artists who may not have considered publication before or have felt excluded from publishing really motivates you. You'll also be inspired by contributing to the publication of new titles which appeal to readers who haven't previously felt like Welsh books are for them.

You have an empathic approach to working. You're organised, curious, resourceful, and a great communicator. You're compelled by connecting people in your work. You ask smart questions, and you're ok with disagreeing, being disagreed with, and with leading difficult conversations. You're creative, an innovator and hard-working, and you like systems and processes. If you recognise yourself in any of this, then we'd really love to hear from you.

You might be early career or you might be looking for a change of direction mid- or late-career. Key is that you're open to learning and can bring excellent literacy skills and strategically aligned values to the role.

We need a workforce that represents an entire spectrum of lived experience. The more diverse the perspectives we have influencing what we do, the stronger and more meaningful our work will be. We encourage applications from all communities, faiths, backgrounds and from anyone who experiences racism, ableism and/or poverty. We recognise the social model of disability and are committed to working with our employees to remove barriers to inclusion. We also seek to overcome the barriers faced by applicants with caring responsibilities through a flexible working culture.

Working for Seren

Every member of our small team has an important role to play in achieving the company's ambitions. We are all advocates for Seren's work and values, and we are encouraged to go and see writers at work, to develop networks and connections, introduce new artists, communities and readers to the company, and help develop ideas for the future. Beyond the specific tasks of each job description, these company-wide activities are a key part of each staff member's contribution and achievement.

Key responsibilities of the role

To work within the Production & Editorial Team in the successful publication of our 2024/2025 fiction and non-fiction titles, as well as supporting the development of the 2025/2026 Publication List and internal practice, with a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion.

Within the following areas, you will be responsible for:

Fiction & Non-Fiction Commissioning

  • Contributing to the quarterly commissioning meetings
  • Contributing to the dynamic production schedule, helping to ensure critical pathways are met
  • Contributing to book budgets, mindful of impact on overall budgets and cashflow
  • Delivering the key processes to initiate publications planned for 2025/2026, including via direct commissions and open call-outs
  • Administering manuscripts submissions, evaluating sample text and acting as first point of contact for submitting writers
  • Working with the support of the mentor to lead on the call-out for, and development of publication proposals by writers who have lived experience of racism, ableism and/or poverty
  • Assisting the Interim CEO with issuing writer contracts

Fiction & Non-Fiction Proof-reading and Copy-editing

  • Completing mentoring and training in proof-reading and copy-editing
  • Proof-reading and copy-editing all non-fiction titles on commission for 2024/2025
  • Developing template external briefs for proof-reading, copy-editing and creative-editing and running call-outs for freelancers with these skill-sets
  • Assisting the Interim CEO with issuing freelancer contracts, as relevant

Industry and Market Trends

  • Developing existing and new relationships with writers, networks and communities, particularly focused on lived experience of racism, ableism and/or poverty, embedding these within Seren as reformed organisational practices allow (see below)
  • Researching and identifying industry and book buying trends, with an emphasis on broadening and increasing Seren's readership
  • Working with the team to support general and title-specific writer and reader profiling and embedding this within commissioning processes

Organisational Development

  • Contributing to the implementation and evolution of Seren's new strategic framework, including the development of new processes and policies with equality, diversity and inclusion in mind
  • Supporting the Production & Editorial, and Sales & Marketing teams in the bespoke development of Seren's practices in line with writer and freelancer needs
  • Supporting in the development of the new Seren brand, aligned with the new strategic and business priorities, including a visual and tone of voice identity and communications assets

General Administration

  • Staffing evening and occasional weekend events as required
  • Delivering and supporting an inclusive approach to all aspects of Seren's work
  • Attending regular company and other meetings as relevant
  • Contributing to governance papers as relevant
  • Scouting for strategically aligned organisational opportunity
  • Pro-actively assisting with any other relevant tasks as required and where necessary

Seren is always open to considering investing in someone who can show us development potential in this role, even though they may not be able to demonstrate all of the essential criteria listed above.

Terms & Conditions

Hours: 35 hours per week (plus a compulsory break for one hour, taking the working week to 40 hours). We operate a Flexible Working Policy where staff can manage their working hours around dynamic professional and personal commitments. Consistent working outside of 9 am – 5 pm would need to be agreed formally but we are open to it.

Working Arrangement: We operate a hybrid working model. This role would be required to work from the Bridgend office for the majority of the working week.

Holidays: 25 days per year, pro rata (excluding statutory Bank Holidays).

Notice: Following completion of a 1-month probationary period, the notice period is one month.

Pension: We offer a stakeholder pension scheme with NEST for all our employees. Monthly contributions are deducted from your salary; you contribute a minimum of 5% - more if you choose to – and we contribute 3%. Once you've completed your probationary period and you know you want to stay, you will be automatically signed up to the scheme, and we will backdate our Company contributions to your start date.

Intellectual Property: Seren Books respects the intellectual property (IP) of ideas expressed in applications and interviews and will never act upon or share these outside of the recruitment process.

How to apply

You can either write a cover letter of no more than 2 pages OR film a video of yourself lasting no more than 5 minutes. We have no preference, and will be happy to accept either format, so feel free to choose whichever suits you best. In your cover letter or video, tell us about you, your experiences, skills and attributes that are relevant to the job, and tell us a bit about what you aspire to in life. What matters to you? What do you believe in? Where would you like to be in 3 years-time? What changes would you like to make to our society? What do you enjoy doing?

If you think you'd do your best by applying in a different format, please get in touch. Our recruitment processes are flexible so long as they remain fair to all, so let us know if there is another way we can mould your application or interview around your specific cognitive needs.

Send us your cover letter, video or other format of application with a completed application form and your CV (no more than 2 pages please, plus references) by 10 am on Monday 17 June 2024.

If you are shortlisted, we'll invite you to interview, likely taking place in the week starting 24 June 2024. These are friendly, 45-minute conversations with approximately three people including Seren's Interim CEO, Deputy Publisher and a Director. We'll send you a rough outline of the questions we'll ask you, and short biographies of the above in advance.
