Job Description

We are a new government arm’s length body supporting the delivery of Britain’s energy security and net zero, making sure that we can power Britain from Britain sustainably. It has been set up to turn nuclear ambition into reality. This is an exciting and critical time to bring your experience and expertise to our organisation.

Are you a strategic leader with a passion for health, safety, security, and quality? Do you excel in driving initiatives that enhance organisational standards and promote a culture of safety? If so, we want to hear from you

The Head of Health, Safety, Security and Quality (HSSQ) plays a pivotal leadership role in ensuring the well-being of our personnel, the protection of our facilities and materials, and the safety of the environment in the complex and highly regulated environment of the nuclear industry. You will leverage your expertise in health, safety, and security principles, regulations, and a deep understanding of nuclear operations to develop and implement comprehensive programs.

Day to day duties:

  • Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive Health, Safety, Security AND Quality(HSSQ) programs aligned with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead a team of safety, security, quality and occupational health professionals in conducting risk assessments, inspections, audits, and drills to identify and mitigate potential hazards and vulnerabilities.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions to address identified safety, security, and health concerns, ensuring continuous improvement of the HSSQ programs.
  • Conduct root cause analyses of incidents and near misses to prevent future occurrences.
  • Stay up-to-date on evolving regulations, technologies, and best practices in all areas of HSSQ within the nuclear industry to continuously enhance program effectiveness.
  • Foster a culture of safety and security within the organisation through training programs, communication initiatives, and promoting a questioning attitude and risk awareness among all personnel.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (e.g., engineering, operations, human resources) to integrate HSSQ considerations into all aspects of nuclear facility operations and activities.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to personnel on safety, security, quality, emergency preparedness, and environmental protection procedures.
  • Oversee the safe, secure, and healthy operation of the nuclear facility by ensuring adherence to all HSSQ policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with our executive and other stakeholders regarding the status of the HSSQ programs and their effectiveness in mitigating risks and ensuring compliance.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive HSSQ documentation, including policies, procedures, risk assessments, and emergency response plans.

  • Represent the organisation at regulatory agency meetings, industry forums, and public outreach events regarding health, safety, and security matters.
  • Lead the team in attaining suitable quality standards including ISO9001 as a first stage in our quality approach.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Proven track record of experience in leading and managing comprehensive health, safety, quality and security programs, preferably within the nuclear industry (or another complex, highly regulated sector).
  • Proven track record of successfully implementing HSSQ programs, mitigating risks, and achieving compliance with regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders and effectively communicate complex HSSQ concepts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify hazards, develop solutions, and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Excellent leadership and organisational skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team, manage multiple projects, and navigate complex stakeholder relationships.
  • A strong commitment to safety, security, and environmental stewardship within the nuclear industry.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field preferred or demonstrable professional experience.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or equivalent safety or security management certification a plus.
