About Us


Climate Policy Radar is on a mission to organise, analyse, and democratise the world’s climate law and policy data. We build open databases and research tools so people can discover, understand and generate data-driven insights on public laws and policies. Our work helps governments, researchers, international organisations, civil society, and the private sector to understand and advance effective climate policies and deploy climate finance. Nearly 350,000 users from over 100 countries already use Climate Policy Radar’s platform, which enables searching through half a million pages documenting climate action, by government, worldwide.


Harnessing data science and AI, and pioneering the application of natural language processing to this domain, our work unlocks previously inaccessible, unstructured data. This serves to enhance accountability, and promote data democratisation, transforming our search engine into a virtual research assistant for the climate world, powered by a unique open knowledge graph. We are deeply embedded in the global climate and AI communities, and count some of the most important organisations and global climate leaders amongst our users, advocates, friends and advisors.


We’re a Community Interest Company, championing an open science approach that aims to promote collaboration, transparency and justice — including open code and data. We are currently around 30 people, and are embarking on a significant growth phase. Our team is characterised by its high level of expertise, shared mission-driven ethos, and a strong collaborative spirit that welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.


We are looking for a Front-end Engineer to join our engineering team, building out the next exciting step of our product roadmap which includes productionising the world’s first open climate law and policy knowledge graph and domain-specific Q&A using responsible AI.


Roles and responsibilities


In this role, you will help build and improve the front-end for our high-impact tools and products for global climate law and policy. You will work on our core app as we extend it to harness the power of AI, our content management service to help data partners manage their document libraries, and experimental functionality in our Labs environment. We have a number of unique ambitions:


  • Evolving our search engine into an AI-powered research assistant.
  • Creating tools to manage our growing collection of documents in the admin service.


Some examples of what you will work on:


  • Integrating generative AI technology across the product portfolio.
  • Implementing new features for our policy search and insights platform.
  • Building interactive data visualisations from a variety of data sources (including dense textual data).
  • Working with our Product Designer on high-quality mockups and prototypes to test out ideas and concepts and enable us to iterate quickly to the optimal solution.
  • Collaborating with data science in our Labs environment.


You bring with you


Solid experience in:


  • React and TypeScript.
  • Common frameworks and libraries such as React Hook Form, Chakra and Axios.
  • State management libraries like React Query, Redux or similar - including knowing the differences and when they should be used.
  • Working with APIs and AWS (or other) cloud-based deployments.
  • Common test automation techniques and frameworks, debugging and optimisation.


A good understanding of:


  • Front-end architecture and best practices.
  • Component, unit and integration testing.
  • UX principles and heuristics.
  • Image editing, SVGs and design tools such as Figma.
  • Desire to work as part of an open, honest, collaborative team.
  • Software engineering fundamentals, version control (Git).
  • Demonstrate a passion for open-source software.


Salary and Benefits


  • Salary ranging from £80-90k, depending on experience

Process:


  • 1 hour behavioural interview with Director of Engineering and one other team member
  • 1.5 hour interview with two team members, consisting of a paired technical assessment
  • 30-minute values fit interview with CEO and Head of People
  • Opportunity to chat to other team members (this is not an interview, but gives you the opportunity to get to know the team and learn more about us in an informal setting)
  • Offer subject to references
