A leading manufacturer of personal care and cosmetic products has partnered with Woodstock recruitment in their search for their next Development Chemist.
Joining a world class team within innovation and development, you will bring previous formulation development experience from the personal care or beauty markets, a passion for developing innovative products and a good commercial acumen.
Key responsibilities:
* Generate formulations or technologies to an internal or external brief. Modify existing formulations or technologies independently.
* Design and substantiate claims based on existing protocols and ensure artwork reflects legal requirements.
* Test formulations from a quality and performance perspective.
* Investigate, optimise, and write methods of lab manufacture, anticipating any impact on larger scale manufacture, highlighting risks and designing methods accordingly.
* Work with raw material ingredient suppliers to identify materials to meet internal and external briefs. Demonstrate an understanding of how materials impact formulations and when to choose which ingredient. Appreciate where materials come from, how they are made, and their overall sustainability impact.
* Keep up to date with market trends in personal care and beauty to bring inspiration to products and keep them relevant.
* Working with Technicians help plan work in the laboratory to deliver against business needs. As part of an appropriate development plan, this role could line manage a Technician.
* Support the Sales and Marketing team by curating and presenting scientific material to customers.
* Work within cross-functional teams to deliver projects to the business against a critical path. Anticipate and mitigate potential risks to projects and ensure stakeholders are aware of progress against project milestones. Provide solutions to issues during formulation development. Understand how I&D actions may impact cross-functional teams.
* Constantly strive to work to a high standard by following of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Understand SOPs (standard operating procedures) and work instructions relevant to I&D role and drive continuous improvement by owning, training, and maintaining work instructions.
Skills, experience and qualification:
* Degree qualification (Level 6 or higher) in a relevant scientific discipline would be advantageous, such as Chemistry or Cosmetic Science
* 3-5 years experience developing cosmetic and personal care formulations
* Excellent verbal and written communications skills with fluency in written and spoken English.
* Strong attention to detail and the ability to work meticulously to ensure accuracy and reproducibility of experimental results.
* Ability to analyse and communicate data in meaningful and accessible ways (reports / presentations).
* Strong knowledge of cosmetic science, including ingredient functionality, stability, and interaction with the skin or hair.
* Solid understanding of product stability testing, quality control, and manufacturing processes.
* Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry guidelines, such as EU Cosmetic Regulation
