Michell Instruments is part of DwyerOmega, a group dedicated to providing precision sensing instrumentation to industrial customers around the world. The group has 13 R&D/manufacturing sites globally in addition to subsidiary offices in Europe, Asia and the Americas. We are looking for a Reserach Scientist focused on sensors to cover maternity leave. You will bring your knowledge of thin-film deposition techniques and their characterisation to a multi-disciplinary research team furthering our sensing technology to fulfil the requirements of emerging applications in gas treatment and renewable energy. Reporting to the Head of Research & Development, you will be responsible for: Hands on contributions to the development of our measurement technologies. Design and test improvements that will achieve the desired performance. Reporting and disseminating findings to members of the team. Collaborate with the engineering and development teams to transform research outputs into New Product Developments. Assessment of obstacles and technical hurdles to the product success, including manufacturability. Provide technical expertise and training to other members of the team. Person Specification for the Role: Qualities Inquisitive self-learner Self-motivated Pragmatic Innovative Open and able communicator Flexible, enthusiastic and a good listener Effective team worker Attention to detail Qualifications Master’s degree or PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics. Skills & Experience Essential: Experience of all main PVD techniques including evaporation & sputtering. Characterisation of thin films including understanding of material properties of thin films and their importance when used in multilayer devices. Experience of sensors and their associated signal processing. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams. Comfortable in the use of mathematics. Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of complex technical issues and develop cross functional relationships. Creative problem-solving abilities, with a logical approach to implementation. Ability to present complex information effectively to a range of audiences. Desirable: Development of PVD processes for manufacturing lines. Experience in product research & development or related environment. Experience in design or implementation of sensing techniques. Application of physics / materials science and or electronics to measurement science
