Policy Officer Decarbonising Industry

About the role
The Policy Officer will be leading on the TUC's work on future-proofing jobs and industrial decarbonisation.
This includes policy development and advocacy for the TUC's Worker-Led Transition project and providing expertise on target high-carbon industrial sectors.
The Worker-led Transition project aims to future-proof manufacturing jobs by accelerating climate action with an active, worker-friendly industrial strategy.The project supports trade unions in high carbon manufacturing industries to develop and promote worker-led decarbonisation plans, to protect jobs against offshoring while cutting carbon emissions.
Target sectors for this project include automotive, steel, ceramics, glass, chemicals, cement, and offshore energy supply chains.
The Policy Officer will make the technical, economic, and policy case for worker-friendly decarbonisation plans, and promote them to decision-makers.
The Policy Officer will be part of the TUC's Worker-led Transition Team, consisting of 4 Project Officers based in TUC regions covering specific target sectors, in addition to this Policy Officer post, and the Senior Policy Officer.
They will also collaborate closely with our partner organisation in this project New Economy Organisers' Network (NEON), TUC regional teams, the wider TUC RISE department, and affiliated unions.
The TUC is calling for a rapid and just transition to a safe climate future that protects quality jobs.What key experience, skills, knowledge and understanding do you need?
You will need:
- Experience in evidencebased policy development on issues related to climate change, technological transformations, and/or manufacturing industries
- Experience initiating and carrying through qualitative or quantitative research projects, ideally related to manufacturing industries, climate change, or technological transformations
- Confident skills in evaluating and understanding both technical & complex quantitative data, and communicating these
- Knowledge of manufacturing sectors and/or technological transformations, ideally industrial decarbonisation
- Strong commitment to the values of the trade union movement, including to protecting manufacturing jobs and tackling climate change
- Excellent verbal, written communication, time management and teamwork skills
